Lyr Req: Angel song

Subject: Angel song
From: ADeane

A lady came into our folk club at the Hood Arms, Kilve and remembered these lyrics that her father used to sing. Can anyone help to find the rest of the words and the tune please? Have we stumped you all this time?!!

I met a beggar old and grey, heard him say, Oh I wonder, yes I wonder If the angels way up yonder Play their harps for me For it's many a mile I've travelled Many a sight I've seen And I'm ready for the glory soon to be

I've done a mudcat lyrics search and a forum search but no luck. Thanks! ADeane

I cannot find the song you wanted but I have got this Parody.
taken from Grey Funnel Lines Cyril Tawney

Mr John Bush's original words, written in Devonport Barracks in the 1920s.
Mr Bush, who left the Navy under the 'Geddes Axe' and returned to the heart of the Midlands, had no idea, until I told him, that his i-nodest piece had become a genuine folk song.

I WAS WALKING THROUGH THE DOCKYARD IN A PANIC
( Tune 'I Wonder, Yes I Wonder')

I was walking through the Dockyard in a panic
When I met a matelot old and grey,
Upon his back he had his bag and hammock,
And this is what I heard him say:

Chorus
I wonder, yes I wonder,
Has the jaunty made a blunder
When he served this draft-chit out for me
For years I've been a stanchion,
I'm the pride of jago's mansion,
It's a shame to send me off to sea.

I like my 'Pride of Keyham' and I like my week-end leave,
And I always bring the Western to the Chief.
{GOOD MORNING CHIEF!}
Oh I wonder, yes I wonder,
Has the jaunty made a blunder
When he served this draft-chit out for me

Shall I wander out the sunny Straits in glory
On a trooper that is chock-a-block?
If I speak to shipmates who have gone before me
They are sure to double up with shock.

Chorus:
I wonder, yes I wonder,
Has the jaunty made a blunder
When he served this draft-chit out for me?
For though we've lots of funnels
We're never rolling gunnels
And I'm always home in time for tea.

I've gazed upon the ocean while walking on the Hoe,
Though I own that that was very long ago
(SO LONG AGO!)
But t'ain't no use to holler,
I'll have to raise a dollar
And wangle back to RNB
