Herring our Joy - CD Available (from mg)

after quite a slow start, the herring cd is coming along nicely. There may or may not be a bit of room left..I really want one song in a Nordic language..I have PM'd Scarpi and he gets first dibs if he could get something traditional in right away. Might have a spot or two for backup insertion..I will have to be farther along before I know anything for sure, so except for Scarpi, it would be a bit of a gamble. Foreign (to me) language is a plus. Already have a great one in Dutch and another in Scots Gaelic. NO NO NO we can not have Shoals of Herring. Great song, perfect for topic, but it has copyrights. There can be ABSOLUTELY NO COPYRIGHT ISSUES. This will be my policy for any future CDs as well..not that I don't respect them, I just need the flexibility that they do not provide. Has to be specific to herring and you can't take a codcentric song and put herring words in it. I would also like pointers to any non-copyrighted pictures..there are great pictures but some will have words over them so there are specific things i am looking for, especially for back cover. Colorful, lots of sea and sky for putting text over. I don't want to put text over faces. Well, thanks. Coming to the beginning of the proximity of the home stretch.

I can't help you with song ideas. I just wanted to congratulate you on nearing completion of your CD.

I'm sure you will let us know when it is finished.

Hey MG - what about THE TOFINO HERRING SEA SHANTY? By Bob Bossin - Brian Robertson sings it. Email me for the words if you've not already come across it.

i absolutely love the song and we have brian robertson singing it on the cannery shed cd. but if you and rika have something already recorded, i probably have room. we are at the point either too many oh dear too few...that stage. some people not submitted that i still think are going to...at this point i can not absolutely guarantee anyone (except Scarpi who I pm'd but he might be busy with volcano) but I think there is probably room for a song or two. You never know if someone is going to come in with a six minute song..i have not timed songs yet...so if you have something in the hopper already I would try to use it. would really like something from western USA or Canada. Loving hands at home are OK for recording. Engineer can tighten up a bit.

I should say I don't repeat songs between cds.. so i meant a different song other than tofino shanty..it is a truly great song and i highly recommend people get it..i think it is one of brian's cds and maybe bob's.

if anyone can understand the scots dialect (or language as they say) and could translate some of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY079gfLUPE song. we have most of i think but the verse where she talks about her father and mother..mother carried the creel i think. had a scots fisherman listen to and he was not even sure of all of it...but a great little song.

but if you want to listen to all the words that would be great..here is what we came up with.

chorus
harvest of herring keep calling me
harvest of herring from out the sea
sailing boats come and sailing boats go
loaded with silver herring oh

i remember when the herring boats came
o'er the waters fae far and wide
down to the toon the curers? would run?
calling the gutters frae their fireside

my memories run lang and so dear
ilka place name was music to hear
from stornaway island bara and wick
ullapool oban shetland malaig

my father    sae weel
my maither    carrying the creel
i went to the gutting at only 13
doon to the fallin?? at rain shine or meen (moon)

valuable gems we'd always been told
were rubies diamonds emeralds and gold
but for us fishers the riches to be
were shoals of herring from out the sea

There was an old man who came from Kinsale. Sing abar-a-linn, sing abar-a-linn. He had a herring, a herring for sale. Sing abar-a-linn, sing abar-a-linn. Sing man from Kinslae, sing herring for sale. Sing abar-a-linn, sing abar-a-linn. And indeed I have more of my herring to sing. Sing abar-a-linn, sing abar-a-linn.

'Al van den drogen haring' was published in 1930 by E.de Cousemaker i Chant populaires des Flamands de France. He collected it in Dunkirk/Duinkerken, There's no copyright on it so you can have a go at it if you like.

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod, a poem written by Eugene Field and published in 1889:

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night
sailed off in a wooden shoe —
Sailed on a river of crystal light,
into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"
the old moon asked the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring fish
that live in this beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we!"
said Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.

It's been set to music a number of times; perhaps the Wellerman Shanty tune could be adapted...

A German song about an opportunistic herring (Harung is an old version of the German word Hering):

IN EINEN HARUNG JUNG UND SCHLANK

Lyrics: Author unknown, from Belgium (Flemish)
Music: 1856 from Flanders

In einen Harung, jung und schlank,
zwo, drei, vier, ss-ta-ta, ti-ra-la-la
der auf dem Meeresgrunde schwamm
zwo, drei, vier, ss-ta-ta, ti-ra-la-la
verliebte sich, o Wunder
ne olle Flunder, ’ne olle Flunder
verliebte sich, o Wunder
ne olle Flunder

Der Harung sprach: Du bist verrückt
du bist mir viel zu plattgedrückt
rutsch mir den Buckel runter
du olle Flunder, du olle Flunder
rutsch mir den Buckel runter
du olle Flunder

Da stieß die Flunder auf den Grund
wo sie ’nen goldnen Rubel fund
ein Goldstück von zehn Rubel
o welch ein Jubel, o welch ein Jubel
ein Goldstück von zehn Rubel,
o welch ein Jubel

Da war die olle Schrulle reich
da nahm der Harung sie sogleich
denn so ein alter Harung
der hat Erfahrung, der hat Erfahrung
denn so ein alter Harung
der hat Erfahrung

Und die Moral von der Geschicht
verlieb dich in nen Harung nicht
denn so ein alter Harung
der hat Erfahrung, der hat Erfahrung
denn so ein alter Harung
der hat Erfahrung

A favorite verse:

Dm--------------------C
A man in the forest once asked of me,
--------F---------------C------Dm-----C--Dm
“How many straw-ber-ries grow in the sea?”
--------------------------C
I answered this fella, as I thought good,
-----F--------------C----------Dm------C--Dm
“As many as red herr-ings grow in the wood.”

Cheerily,
Charlie Ipcar

i think at this point i must declare it full up. Please get in touch with me though if you have something in the hopper or that you can easily record. At this point I have not timed the songs and I don't have everything in and there could be something last minute opening up. Jon Bartlett, you have first dibs now if you have something from west coast but there is a possibility (small) that I could not squeeze it in.

Can anyone sing in Yiddish and want to sing a Yiddish song of 2-3 minutes? It is an old vaudeville song and in public domain. It is important as an example of how important herring is for food and it is a cute song, but should not be camped up. My local people keep saying they can't learn it in two weeks. That is a foreign thought to me. I have offered to someone and have not heard and I can not wait. there is a very small chance there won't be room so I would ask someone to sing it with and without the final verse. OK to record on I phone etc. if sound is good.

if someone could be so kind as to change the header to Herring CD available that would be great.

i don't have in my hands right now. But it has been shipped so i should get it in a few days.

Price structure: $10 (add shipping for each) if you promise to learn two songs. (and only have to learn one if it is the one in Scots Gaelic). $12 if you promise to learn one song. $15 if zero songs. Shipping is $2.50 in US. I am going to hold off on other places for a bit as even to canada it gets horribly expensive and i have some sort of online ways to buy it through cd baby etc. 22 songs in all including two spoken word...some songs are trad and some are brand new for the cd. i guarantee that you will love at least half if you like maritime music. Some beautiful songs and beautiful voices. You will probably recognize many of the artists.
Many aspects of herring community other than shipwrecks...just pm me. i can take paypal but prefer checks.

If you're including notes I'm pretty certain the earliest extant version of the Herring's Head is Scottish, c1830s. Can give you reference if needed.
If you're self producing I wouldn't worry too much about copyright unless you're planning on making big bucks. Lots of people have recorded Shoals of Herring without being chased for copyright. 'Come all ye fisher lasses' is also MacColl I believe.

too late for advice now, although i appreciate it. notes are just very short due to so many songs. as for song snippets..might happen later. it is supposed to be available online later but i haven't sorted it out yet. take my word for it...songs are very pretty for the most part and voices are very very pretty, especially some of the ladies. i like pretty songs sung by pretty voices. you honestly can't go wrong if you live in states at least. postage is awfully expensive to other countries. just pm me for more info. I will take checks and probably paypal..i should have it tomorrow if ups delivers to the right address..they keep not doing that with some new drivers.

cool. i also have a couple i have to make copies of. i still have enough copyright payments to do this. one is called cannery shed and one is called an gorta mor/the potato famine. both are really good but copyright issues will eventually be a problem if i sell too many. that is why i will not work with copyrights any more. gets too complicated and keeps me from allowing people to make copies on their own, especially overseas where it is so expensive to mail..although i will be having stuff on cd baby. i totally respect everyone's opinions and policies on copyrights, but i must refrain from including songs that have them. also, i have ordered more but i have basically sold out the first run of the herring cd..not a big order. i only order so many at a time and then reorder. more expensive but easier overall.
