A SHANTY FOR SINGING
Words and music: Tom Lewis

On a ship under sail, in a breeze or a gale,
There was hard work for sailors to do.
(So) They shouted and bawled as they heaved and they hauled,
Sometimes only six hands in the crew.
(For) The sailors had songs, just to help work along,
At capstan and windlass and line,
Whether hoisting the main-yard or hauling a halyard.
The shanty-man kept them in time.

CHORUS:
(but) This is a shanty for singing,
Add your voice, get the rafters a-ringing.
You all know what to do, harmonise with your crew,
This is a shanty for singing.

There are hymns in the kirk, there are shanties for work,
There are songs for each rhyme and each reason,
There are love songs entrancing and pop songs for dancing
And carols when they are in season.
With the sun on your neck, or green water on deck
There was always a job to be done
But here in the pub, with fine ale and good grub
The singing is part of the fun.

CHORUS:
(so) This is a shanty for singing,
Add your voice, get the rafters a-ringing.
You all know what to do, harmonise with your crew,
This is a shanty for singing.

Sing a shanty for pumps when you’re down in the dumps,
‘Short-drag’ when you’ve not got much time.
A ‘stamp-and-go’ serves if you’re just a bit nervous
A ‘forebitter’ doesn’t need to rhyme … (or scan.)
When the room starts to sway, or you’re drifting away,
You surely have too much drink taken.
If the girl of your fancy says her name is Nancy
She’ll probably leave you forsaken.

CHORUS:
(now) This is a shanty for singing,
Add your voice, get the rafters a-ringing.
You all know what to do, harmonise with your crew,
This is a shanty for singing.

There’s no man and no maid who should ‘ere be afraid,
Of singing at toil or at leisure
For at work or at play, every sailor will say
That singing is always a pleasure.
At the bar of a capstan or bar of a pub
Raise your voice let the melody fly.
Every girl every boy, don’t be shy, don’t be coy
Whenever the chorus comes by …

CHORUS:
(for) This is a shanty for singing,
Add your voice, get the rafters a-ringing.
You all know what to do, harmonise with your crew,
This is a shanty for singing.

Gilbert and Sullivan springs to mind.

Very much the G&S feel! Goes with a nice swing.

I don't know what any of the last 4 posts mean! Is it good or bad?

Depends what you're into. Why not have a look and listen? If you like the pirates in Disney's Peter Pan then it's right up your street.

A bit more about Tom and the reasons behind his new 'shanty' on his web site for those who don't know him.

http://www.tomlewis.net/

I first met him at Fylde many years ago and was well pleased when I found he was a regular visitor to Skipton Folk Club after I moved near there. Along with Cyril Tawney, another ex submariner, Tom is very knowledgeable on all things nautical and probably as far removed from the Disney pirate genre as you can get :-)

Sorry, Dave
I didn't spot you were the OP.

Firstly, calling it a 'shanty' which it is nothing like (along with The Wellerman) is misleading. Why not just call it a song about chanties?

I have hitherto thought of Tom as someone 'very knowledgeable on all things nautical', which is why the recording is somewhat surprising to me. The song itself reminds me certainly of the stuff put out by Gilbert and Sullivan, and the costumes in the recording rather make the whole thing tongue-in-cheek to say the least.

If that is what was intended then fair dos, but it won't do his credibility at Mystic Seaport much good.

I'd better add IMO hadn't I?

Tom Lewis is always popular at Mystic because he is an Entertainer and Showman who sings extremely well.
He seldom if ever sings traditional material, preferring his own songs that are often slightly tongue in cheek and funny. You can be sure of a packed Boatshed every time he performs...and long may it be so...if he ever gets back there again...

Fair enough, Tim. I'll take off my purist hat and just enjoy the fun!

I think the clue is in the quotes around 'shanty'. Not my affectation but Tom's. And, yes Steve, like Wellerman, I think it is fun to be enjoyed :-)

I think the FIRST clue is in the lyrics.

Shanties were for singing but whilst working.
all singing is fun as far as i am concerned , otherwise i would not do it.
I have yet to hear of singing used as a form of torture.

A blast of Black Sabbath makes plants bloom, says radio gardener. ... Beardshaw says using rock music as a nutrient appears to create larger flowers and they are more disease-resistant. The test came about because one of his horticultural students wanted to write a dissertation based on the effects of music on plants.
