Sandman - I am puzzeled.

Is this the same "Harry Cox" that suppressed free exchange of lyrics for decades?

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

If so....I would consider him the catalst for, "chilling effects". ..a fabulous google off-shoot that posted full lyrics requesting removal.

From Bearman's Thesis - THE ENGLISH FOLK MUSIC MOVEMENT 1898 — 1914A Thesis Submitted to the University of Hull

"Thomson seemed to be aware of the lack of evidence for his assumptions, since he fell back on an argument which might be thought both ludicrous and presumptuous. He drew on his own experience with a modem singer (Harry Cox, 1885-1971), and argued that because Cox had a collection of printed material, such collections must have been widespread but were never divulged to the collectors of the first revival. He then argued that the singers suppressed their knowledge of printed material because the collectors 'privileged' the tunes and praised the singers' retentive memories."

Is this what you meant above..??

I am talking about one of the most respected tradtional singers in the uk.
if you watch the clips it is quite obvious that Cox was not using words as a prop, listen to the clips enjoy the songs and feck off with this bullshit waffle that is an attempt to denigrate a fine singer and a kind man

Where did that come from? Dick was just drawing our attention to Harry Cox as a performer, singer, and treasure house of songs. I only wish I had seen him live. I treasure the film of Cox and Sam Larner.
They are on You Tube. Apologies if that is the link above.

In my post on 6th May - I was only trying to ask what Gargoyle was on about in his post about - "suppressed free exchange of lyrics for decades?"

I happened to find the passage in Bearman's Thesis and there seemed to be some sort of cross over....

I have long thought that Harry Cox was the greatest of the English singers...and I don't care a fig where he got his songs from...Everyone should be listening to him!!

How do you think Pop Maynard stands in comparison. I know nobody is in a competition here, but I believe Harry Cox has the edge in technique, but I prefer Pop Maynard's different approach to his many songs. By the way all of the Hamer recordings of Pop are now available on the Full English.
Anyone who thinks Harry Cox is just an old bloke singing, try singing along with him, taking a breath when he does, and see how long you last, (then try it with Pop Maynard).
