Wimoweh -Miriam Makeba

Before the Tokens, even before the Weavers, or Jimmy Dorsey, Wimoweh was. Here is the song in all its glory sung by the masterful Miriam Makeba.

' "Mbube" (Zulu for "lion") was written in the 1920s by Solomon Linda, a South African Zulu singer, who later worked for the Gallo Record Company in Johannesburg as a cleaner and record packer. '

It sure has been around.

That quote was from the YouTube page. The date is out to lunch by about 20 years. There's a good Wikipedia article about Solomon Linda and the info there looks good.
