And it's the second time in less than a week that Irish President Michael D. Higgins has paid tribute to an important figure in Irish tradtional music - Tony McMahon and Paddy Maloney). Not so long ago, Irish radio was playing accounts of Seán O Riada, Irish composer and arranger and speaker/broadcaster who died half a century ago. Seán Ó Riada formed Ceolteóirí Chualann, the precursor of the Chieftains. Unlike the céilí bands of the time, which would play mainly in unison, Ceoltóirí Chualann and later The Chieftains featured solo spots for the various instruments. Ó Riada and Ceoltóirí Chualann are also attributed with reviving (or finding new ways for) the use of the bodhrán drum in Irish music. So they had a huge influence on the music that followed. |

I can listen to their music over and over again and never get tired of it. In fact many of their albums are on the USB in my car stereo so I do listen to them a lot when I am driving. I love the uillean pipes so I can probably attribute my love of them mostly to Paddy Moloney. My other Chieftains hero, also now deceased, is the harper Derek Bell. Imagine the music sessions they'll be having up there in heaven. |

I remember a concert I saw in Plymouth,the band were playing a tune in which Paddy played a phrase on whistle which was echoed by Derek Bell on harp. Paddy changed the phrase slightly differently each time and glanced at Derek with a cheeky gleam in his eye,Derek played each challenge perfectly.In the interval which followed man sat beside me asked what I was so amused by,he missed the joke completely. R.I.P Paddy you will be sorely missed. |

I loved the Chieftains’ music too, and saw them lives number of times, as well as any times on TV. I did enjoy their collaborations, especially those with Chinese, and on another occasion, Galician musicians. We tried to play “Full of Joy” - a tune they learned from the Chinese band - last night. |

I have a fair old collection of Chieftains' albums. I don't play them these days, but that goes for so many, most, probably, of the hundreds of Irish music albums I've bought down the years. I suppose that has a lot to do with the fact that I played Irish tunes (until my hearing let me down) in sessions and parties for 25 years or more, and came to accept the edginess and fluidity of live playing as the antithesis of the repeated listening to records. Having said that, today we had to drive home from Barnstaple to Bude after a rather unattractive hospital mission. There was nothing great going on on Radio 3 or Classic FM, so I whacked on my copy of the Bothies live at the BBC. Mrs Steve is generally unimpressed with my musical predilections, but I secretly observed her tapping a foot extensively on the journey home. I'm not sure that The Long Black Veil would have elicited a similar response. I suppose that Paddy, Planxty and the Bothies took traditional Irish by the scruff of its rather staid neck and gave it a damn good shaking. It didn't change it but it did add a whole new dimension, and I was just at the right age to embrace it. . |
