I'm no whiz kid about computers, but it appears that a non-member, or anyone posting from a cookie-less machine, can type in whatever alias they like. It might be that the 'cat can trace the origin of the bogus posts. Then we could flood that machine with e-mail. Sort of a just deserts campaign. Assumming, of course, that it's a lawful thing to do.

I won't get into details, because the imposter could use it to refine his/her technique for next time if they can't be stopped by technical means. In an all inclusive community there will always be criminals. We thought that because we all were of a like mind that we wouldn't be subject to such criminality. To steel someones intelectual property is a terrible crime indeed. But to steel there identity and misrepresent it is the act of more than a criminal. Its the act of a coward. It is far worse than the coward who hides behind anonymity. Our system of trust is such that anyone bcarring a grudge could libel another from hiding and leave no recourse to the wronged party.

The lawyer types will tell us that there is or is not a "Crime of Law" committed here. But some how we need to deal with a "Crime of Place". We need to keep ourselves secure from this rape of identity. Our names and our words are the only way we know each other for the mosr part. I want no one to mistake me or my words so I use my own name but even that is subject to a criminal act and I have no defense. Where do we go with this?

Not a clue. But we have to find a step we can take for our own security. Trust me Katey, and everyone else, if I have something to say it'll come from me and you can always send me a private line to verify.

But, there is one good thing to come of it. This gives me, and the other folks here, an opportunity to tell you how much we love and respect you. And how much we value you. I guess I'd rather not have someone obnoxious (whoever they are) claiming to be me. I don't consider myself an easily inflamed gal, but it seems a pretty personal violation to me. If you want to be upset, angry, humorous, obnoxious, pedantic, grouchy, whatever, be it, but be it in your own name, and certainly not in someone else's. That's a kind of theft and meanness combined. Given the BS support I received from this group when my Father died, I check in at the threads about healing, but I don't have to if I don't choose to. Just pass 'em by if they truly annoy you, but I somehow don't think that's the issue here.

I think everybody needs to take a deep breath and get a little perspective here. Kat, I think you are a wonderful person, but I believe you overreacted to this. A simple response like, "Very funny. Signed, the real Katlaughing" would have made your point and not given the anonymous poster all the pleasure I'm sure he/she got from your actual response.

And, to "the one who perpertated this", there are pranks and there are pranks, and this one was mean-spirited, in a way that does offend many of the people who form this community. You aren't the only one to have figured out this "big flaw in the Mudcat system." There's a similar "flaw" in the traffic control system of every city and town: cars don't automatically stop when the light is red. Those of us who drive cars depend on other people to do the right thing. I'm glad you apologized. Giving your name would have been nice, too.

And everybody, please turn the volume down a bit. Yes, it's unnerving and offensive when someone uses someone else's name to post something that reflects badly on you. And it makes you angry. But let's not blow it out of proportion. Let's save our righteous anger for the _real_ crimes that blight the world, and let these little ones go with humor and forbearing. I'm not generally one to preach, but this forum and this community mean a lot to me here in the middle of the ocean, and I think it's a good place to start to work for peace.

This has got to be one of the funniest things I have ever read on the net!

Anywhere else, admin. would have been notified, and the spam would be remeoved and the spammers IP# would be forever blocked... easy as that...

Failing that, why not try what other MB's that I've been to have done to deal with spammers... Make a password part of the cookie... that way one must register in order to post... and when a registered user spams tyhe board, it's very easy to then remove the spam, cancel the account, and block the IP#... Thier ISP can also be contacted and there is the likelyhood that thier service will be canceled...

That'll fix thier little red wagon!

Well, this has gone on long enough, I think. I don't feel right in deleting threads that have this much discussion in them - that's Max's decision. I would like to ask people to stop discussion of this matter completely. It's the only way to settle things down.
I'm writing this as an addendum to somebody's post so the thread doesn't go to the top of the menu again.
I don't care how outraged you feel - everybody, just CHILL OUT and let Max do what he wants to do in the morning.

I don't think I've ever read such a string of confusion since I've been on the internet at all.

But it's entirely logical that it should happen, if anyone at all can post under any name they want.

I've noticed that since I registered, my screen name pops up automaticly when I get to the form for posting a new message.

I am on a couple of listserves (mailing lists, not web pages like this) and there is no such problem - or rather, there is from time to time, but it only lasts until the list administrator becomes aware of it and boots the offender. That's why I habitually type f*ck or sh*t rather than spelling them out in full. On some lists you get kicked off for any "dirty" words.

Can the software be modified so that you have to be a registered member to post? I understand, freedom of expression and all that, but freedom of expression combined with anonimity inevitably turns the place into a haven for a certain number of assholes, I mean *ssh*l*s.

Just a thought.

One has to ask - was any part of this thread actually posted by the people who it is attributed to? I'd say yes, because as said before, people have distinct writing styles and it would take a master wordsmith to copy a bunch of people, but newbies wouldn't know the difference.

IMHO - this could hurt the Mudcat far more than any regular BS/cotroversial thread could.

I don't liketo make work for people, but I'd support some form of login code to insure that everyone posts under their own name.
