2024 Obit: Suffolk singer Eric Baker

Eric died on Wednesday 3rd April (2024). He'd been in hospital for several weeks and had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He was a well loved singer of traditional Suffolk (England) songs that were sung with a strong Suffolk accent. I knew him well from various local singarounds and he was always cheerful and willing to accompany tunes and "bouncy" songs with Morris, his jig doll. He will be missed in all the local sessions here in Suffolk. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread and send my condolences to all those who know and love him.

Lovely words Pete to which I would like to add my own thoughts and memories of Eric, who will be sadly missed with his Jig Doll, Morris, his renditions of traditional songs and poems delivered with his wonderful Suffolk accent and humour and his playing lovely tunes in his special personal way with the Psaltery.

Such sad news about Eric, a stalwart of the Suffolk pub scene for so long. We will miss his traditional songs, such as ‘The Nutting Girl’ and ‘Bungay Roger’, his frequent companion Morris, the jig doll, and his playing on the bowed psaltery, but most of all, we’ll miss him. I’ve paid my own tribute by performing the tune he wrote for the 17thC poem ‘The Battle of Sole Bay’.
