Old Songs 2024 in Altamont, NY

Hello old friends. I haven't been on this forum in a long time and have only rarely looked at some Mudcat posts on Facebook. I hope you're all doing as well as can be expected.

I live near Altamont, NY and am thinking of attending Old Songs next week (probably not camping seeing as I live so close). I went last year but only on Friday evening.

I miss singing and don't get to do near enough of it these days. If anyone's going to be at Old Songs this year, please let me know! Looks like there's a Quebecois band this year which I always enjoy...

all the best,
Peg

p.s. also: I might be moving to southern New Hampshire later this year so am wondering if there's anyone who knows of any good trad sessions (or singing circles) in that area.

Peg! I was just thinking of you the other day! It's good to see you here (I'm hardly ever here, myself, but serendipity happens).

Alas, this is approximately the 10 anniversary of my not going to Old Songs. I now live in central Maine, and hope to go again, but it's getting harder to get here, and my aging (almost 80!) husband really can't deal with the heat and the crowds. If we could find/borrow a decent motor home, that would help.

Alas, this year we're preparing for a trip to Orkney and Shetland. We depart next week! We've gotten a grant to study the music and dance and bring what we learn back to local schools.

But-Old Songs. Lots of my dear ones are going, and I hope you go, too. Please hug everyone for me!

Look out for the Ballad Session on Saturday & Hymn Session on Sunday, not on the schedule but posted on the outhouse doors (seriously!) to begin a couple hours before the scheduled stuff, meaning 7 or 8 am, in I think area 10.

Run by Sue & Don Grant.

They (official people) haven't chased us out yet.

I will be at shape note (alto), hymn sing & various sessions in Sheep & Cattle Barns on my walker in high seating section. Great line-up of performers!

Animaterra! Allison! Was thinking of you the other day too and the lovely dancing and singing that used to happen in the old days. I hope Maine has been kind to you. Understood a motor home would make things much easier. I'm lucky to live close enough that I can drive in and out for the day/evening; last time I camped there in a tent a storm at daybreak destroyed my lodgings!

I'm not sure yet which days I can go, maybe Friday and Saturday.

Also Allison, how wonderful you will be in Scotland for musical magic! Congratulations on this wonderful opportunity. I attended a conference in Aberdeen many years ago and saw a bit of Edinburgh and the highlands. Would love to go back to Scotland one day.
I have good friends in Cambridge, UK and usually stay with them when I travel over (have covered the London Film Festival the last 3 years, 2 of them remotely due to the ongoing pandemic). Do stay safe when traveling and hope all goes beautifully!

Thanks for the well wishes! And perhaps in a year or so I'll make it back to Old Songs.
All the best to you and to all who are going!

No informal hymn session tomorrow. No Grants could come this year & the peeps who took over the ballad session "don't do hymns".

Old Songs is alive & well under the leadership of Joy Bennett. Even though the Patons & Folk Legacy no longer have a place at the festival, their heritage is felt & the "children" of Folk Legacy march on! I had a lovely time on both Saturday & Sunday, singing, listening, & reuniting with beloved friends! The performer line-up was excellent as usual! If feasible, I hope you'll try to join us at Altamont next year!

best,

bbc

I went this year for the 1st time and it was wonderful.
I heard a song whose lyrics included: He thrust out his feathers and sang. Do you know where to find it?

I've moved to Ithaca from Ohio some time ago and have gone to Old Songs several times, but not since the pandemic. Hoping to go next year- lots of friends here go... Love this fest.
