The New York Times has an excellent obituary. I read about half of it aloud to my wife, but it was so long that I couldn't finish reading it all. He'll get the care and respect he deserves from this administration. (I heard a news person read Trump's statement, and of course he had to make it about himself.) They both were remarkable people and history will treat them well. It turns out that Jimmy Carter was quite a music fan, and an early admirer of the Allman Brothers Band. All of the stuff coming up on the radio this evening is including tidbits like that. So Colin, perhaps you can look the the mid-70s music for that relevant song. |

I seem to recall that Jimmy Carter was despised by many Americans when he was in power. Reagan was exactly the right man/ wrong man to see him off... But Jimmy Carter, for decades after, continued to live a life that marked him out as a shining beacon of humanity, so he still was able to give a lot to the world. |

One of them that works about 3/4 of the time is the "Just Read" browser extension you can put on Chrome or Firefox. It's a Blue square with a book symbol and it is intended to pull just the text into a screen and leave out the ads, but it also often brings up the text without the paywall blocker. |

The Carter Administration's former chief of protocol, and his wife, are retired in this area, and spoke to the paper. They were present at Camp David for the whole tense period where the accords were worked out. They had nothing but good to say about Jimmy Carter and the example that he set. It was very affirming. |

Then on January 7 his remains are flown to Washington DC, with a funeral procession that will first proceed to the US Navy Memorial and then to the US Capitol, where he will lie in state. January 9 is the national day of mourning for Jimmy Carter. with a state funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington. That same day, Special Air Mission 39 flies Carter back to Georgia. Jimmy however was noted for human rights by the time he became Govenor. By amazing grace he broke family tradition and became an honored human being. |

They were removed in 1986 during roof repairs, and the panels were placed in storage. Unity College of Maine acquired the panels in 1991, and used them until 2010. His son speaking at an event in Georgia at the Carter Center. I don't need to see what a funeral cortege looks like, or the moving of the coffin in and out of the hearse for various events, to be moved by the slow-moving respectful schedule that is given us to appreciate the importance of this leader. I will watch the ceremony on the 9th. |

Obama drew the short straw and ended up sitting beside Trump. Dubya didn't shake Trump's hand. Michelle wasn't there - perhaps she was the designated survivor of presidential family members should something go wrong? ;-) I loved the stories and the accounts people told. It was, as with Rosalynn's funeral, beautiful, not too long, down to earth, but very heartfelt. |

Like Trump and the Mrs. not putting hands over hearts (perhaps because they're both empty vessels in that category) when the coffin passed entering and exiting. People didn't shake hands with Trump. Michelle Obama didn't attend (she also won't attend the inauguration) because she so despises the man. That had to be a difficult choice, with Carter being such a champion of things she supports. My thought, as I listened to the speakers enumerate all of the programs that Carter introduced that Trump was probably making a list of those programs in order to try to shut them down. Such completely different people, both with their own flaws, but Trump with such loathing for many people and such guile to get his way that the funeral served to highlight just how truly awful he is. Carter did get out at the right time. He left his mark and helped people. Let's hope his foresight was strong enough to prevent that work from being unraveled. And keep those flags at half-staff for the full 30 days. |
