Bill and Libby Hicks did a house concert in the D.C. area last Saturday and it was very well received and very enjoyable. Bill was one of the original Red Clay Ramblers. His fiddling and singing on old time songs are a rare treat. Libby is basically a blues singer and guitarist, a very fine instrumentalist with a warm rich voice. But they do more than old-time and blues and they are a treat to listen to and really nice people.

On January 27 at 8 PM, Bill & Libby will be playing at the Godfrey Daniels Coffee House, 7 East Fourth Street, Bethlehem, PA. Phone is (610)867-2390. Tickets $9.50 at the door.

On Wed, Jan 26 at 7 pm, they'll be on Tom Druckenmiller's radio program in Allentown, PA. (I think this time conflicts with Mudcat Radio but still....)

By the way, they've both checked out Mudcat from time to time and like it a lot, and Libby says she posted to the "Worst Line in a Country Song" thread....

I've copied their short bio. To read the much funnier long bio, go to this address (Help!! Joe!!! If what you see is a blue clicky thing and not just a URL, Joe gets all the credit!!):

Bill and Libby Hicks have been mainstays of the traditional music scene for decades. Bill is a founding member of the Red Clay Ramblers and a recording member of the Fuzzy Mountain String Band. A songwriter as well, Bill learned fiddling techniques from such masters as Burl Hammons and Tommy Jarrell. In addition to touring the country with the Red Clay Ramblers, and appearing on all their recorded work from 1972 until 1981, he also appeared in the Off-Broadway smash "Diamond Studs." In 1995, the Fuzzy Mountain String Band's two LPs--which critics have called "the gold standard" of string band music--were re-released on CD, sparking a reunion tour of the original Fuzzy Mountain band at MerleFest, in Wilksboro, NC. Partner Libby Hicks is likewise an accomplished artist. During the 1970s Libby performed in a variety of venues, serving as the "harmonizing half" of a duet with North Carolina blues artist Lightnin' Wells. For years Libby and Lightnin' delighted audiences with "prison and drinking songs" as well as more somber and subdued melodies. She has been a featured performer at literally hundreds of events. In 1982 Libby teamed with Bill Hicks, creating a vibrant fusion of guitar, fiddle and keyboard interpretations of Appalachian tradition and old time string band singing. Over the years, Bill and Libby have continued to expand their musical horizons. They have served on staff at the Augusta Heritage Workshops at Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia, sharing their love of American mountain music with students from around the world. They continue to perform at music festivals and at special events across the country.

Which reminds me Rita, will they be at Elkins this year? Bill said too that you have a friend who attends regularly.

The Original Red Clay Ramblers were an American treasure. I've read some of Bill's rememberances at the RCC site. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Libby, but I am with her former associate Lightnin' Wells, a superb ragtime fingerpicker. Hope to hear Bill and Libby together someday.
