I am looking for TAB for Galway to Graceland, preferrably the whole thing and not just a solo. I just spent 40 bucks for the 3-cd set and would like to get some TAB to help me start playing it.

Many thanks, Bob

Hi, Bob

Don't have TAB for Galway to Graceland, but I can point you to the chords, which is a start. Here's a valuable link to many Richard Thompson tunes (some with chords, others with TAB) residing at OLGA.

Good hunting and good luck. I'm always glad to meet another Thompson fan.

Hi folks. I went to a great consert last saturday with one of Irelands finest singers, Sean Keane. It was one of the best conserts I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot! I play guitar and sing a bit myself, and I really would like to get the lyrics and cords to as many of the songs he sings as possible. One of my favorites at the consert was the Richard Thompson-tune "From Galway to Graceland", from Keanes "Turn a phrase"-album.That is by the way a fab album. A perfect 10! Thank you Ireland for all the great music, and thank you folks for all the help you hopefully can give me.

Is this the song you're looking for?

FROM GALWAY TO GRACELAND

Oh she dressed in the dark and she whispered "Amen"
She was pretty in pink like a young girl again
Twenty years married and she never thought twice
She sneaked out the door and walked into the night
And silver wings carried her over the sea
From the west coast of Ireland to West Tennessee
To be with her sweetheart, oh she left everything
From Galway to Graceland to be with the king

She was humming Suspicion, that's the song she liked best
She had Elvis I Love You tattooed on her breast
When they landed in Memphis, well her heart beat so fast
She'd dreamed for so long, now she'd see him at last
She was down by his graveside day after day
Come closing time they would pull her away
Ah to be with her sweetheart, oh she'd left everything
From Galway to Graceland to be with the king

Ah, they came in their thousands from the whole human race
To pay their respects at his last resting place
Ah, but blindly she knelt there and she told him her dreams
And she thought that he answered or that's how it seems
Then they dragged her away it was handcuffs this time
She said "My good man are you out of your mind.
Don't you know that we're married? See, I'm wearing his ring.
From Galway to Graceland to be with the king.
I come From Galway to Graceland to be with the king."

Thats a nice song which I have never heard of before.

Do you have some chords and dots for it? Do you know where there is a sound clip of it?

Regards

Shep

Thank you very much! You made my (and Oisin's)day.

Now if I could only sing. Fortunately, he doesn't seem to mind. Yet. I still worry some poor soul's hiding in the closet listening to me try to squish ten words into one note or drag ten notes out of one word...etc...

Thanks again,

I suspect it's FROM GALWAY TO GRACELAND by the incomparable Richard Thompson. It's on his "Watching the Dark" box, a live version on "Two Letter Words" and Plainsong cover it on a tribute to him CD the title of which escapes me right now. Goes something like:

Well, she dressed in the dark, and she whispered "amen."
She was pretty in pink like a young girl again.
Twenty years married, and she never thought twice.
She sneaked out the door (or she picked up her bags) and walked into the night.

And silver wings carried her over the sea,
From the west coast of Ireland to west Tennessee.
Just to be with her sweetheart, oh, she left everything
From Galway to Graceland to be with the King.

She was humming 'Suspicion.' That's the song she liked best.
She had 'Elvis I love you' tattooed on her breast.
When she landed in Memphis, oh, her heart beat so fast.
She'd dreamed for so long. Now she'd see him at last.

She knelt by his graveside day after day.
Come closing time, they would pull her away.
Just to be with her sweetheart, oh, she left everything
From Galway to Graceland to be with the King.

Well, in their thousands they came there from the whole human race,
To pay their respects at his last resting place.
Ah, but blindly she knelt there, and she told him her dreams,
And she thought that he answered, or that's how it seemed.

When they dragged her away, it was handcuffs this time.
She said, "My good man, are you out of your mind?
Don't you know that we're married? See, I'm wearing his ring.
I've come from Galway to Graceland to be with the King,
From Galway to Graceland to be with the King."

Typical, glorious Thompson -- sweet-lady-turns-out-to-be-nutter....

I would guess that the tribute album Simon had in mind is "The World Is A Wonderful Place" released by Green Linnet. It is an excellent compilation with a wide variety of styles. John

There's another Thompson tribute album besides the one mentioned by John - 'Beat the Retreat: Songs by Richard Thompson' Capitol 8314822 - but it does not contain the song in question.

Hope that helps (not being a guitarist -- well I own one but...) -- this means very little to me :-) )

I think it was composed to accompany a radio play.
There certainly was a play telling the story and the song was used throughout.

Keith,

I may be wrong but I think it was the other way round - the play was inspired by the song.

While in fairness I've only heard one version, I recommend it highly: The High Kings perform a lovely rendition of this song that can likely be found on YouTube. I'd link if I could do so correctly from this machine.

Richard Thompson singing it here.

The picture's a bit dodgy, but the sound's OK.

Interestingly although words above are pretty much what I'd heard previously, in this clip Richard sings "She sang Love me tender" rather than "She was humming Suspicion".

I have it on "pure celtic chillout" cd sung by Eleanor Shanley, a very moving rendition.

I learned it from Plainsong on the "The World Is a Wonderful Place" tribute CD. Great song.

My second favorite "Transatlantic" song, after Pipers' Refrain.

Or maybe third after that and Mick Ryan's Lament. I'm not sure.
