From: Joe Offer

Could somebody post the lyrics to this great song? Judy Cook and Sara Grey sing it. I was hoping to sing it myself on Wednesday night. I thought somebody posted the lyrics, but I'll be danged if I can find 'em.
If you have the tune and the ability to send it, please click on my name below and send it by e-mail.
Thanks.
Joe Offer

Here's what I know of it:
CHORUS:
My God, he is a rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land.
My God, he is a rock in a weary land,
Shelter in a time of storm.

Stop! Let me tell you about Chapter One,
When...

Well, I was hoping somebody had this typed up already. Here's a transcription. Alison, did you say you can post a tune?

MY GOD, HE IS A ROCK
(believed to be traditional)
CHORUS:
My God, he is a rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land.
My God, he is a rock in a weary land,
Shelter in a time of storm.
Stop! Let me tell you about Chapter One,
When the Lord God's work had just begun.

Stop! Let me tell you about Chapter Two,
When the Lord God read the Bible through.

Stop! Let me tell you about Chapter Three,
When the Lord my God died on Calvary.
CHORUS

Stop! Let me tell you about Chapter Four,
When the Lord God lived among the poor.

Stop! Let me tell you about Chapter Five,
When the Lord God brought the dead alive.

Stop! Let me tell you about Chapter Six,
When he went to Jerusalem, he healed the sick.
CHORUS

Stop! Let me tell you about Chapter Seven,
When the Lord God died and went to heaven.

Stop! Let me tell you about Chapter Eight,
When the Lord, he stood at the pearly gate.

Stop! Let me tell you about Chapter Nine,
When the Lord God changed the water to wine.

Stop! Let me tell you about Chapter Ten,
Well, the Lord my God, he's a-comin' again.
CHORUS

(transcribed from "Sara," an album by Sara Gray)

From: Nathan in Texas

Here's a related hymn that I grew up with. You can hear the tune at the Cyberhymnal site.

A Shelter in the Time of Storm

Words: Vernon J. Charlesworth, circa 1880.

Music: Ira David Sankey, circa 1885

The Lord's our Rock, in Him we hide,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
Secure whatever ill betide,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

Refrain
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A shelter in the time of storm.

A shade by day, defense by night,
A shelter in the time of storm;
No fears alarm, no foes afright,
A shelter in the time of storm.

Refrain

The raging storms may round us beat,
A shelter in the time of storm
We'll never leave our safe retreat,
A shelter in the time of storm.

Refrain

O Rock divine, O Refuge dear,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
Be Thou our helper ever near,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

Refrain

Thanks! This will also end up in our service. Especially for the tune tip. I've been to Cyberhymnal but not since I got the sound running on the 'puter. Sankey was a great guy. I have a bunch of Albert Brumley stuff too.

A belated note of credit for this one - I think both Sara Grey and Judy Cook learned this from Berta Scott-Macnow, who is a great singer and much too shy about it!

Joe-I met Judy Cook at our sing at the Mermaid last night-she's great! She confessed to being a lurker, so try and message her-she uses her own name. She's coming to do a house concert in West Chester next Friday, the 25th, so Max and you other Phila area 'catters, let's turn out for her!

I love the different possible interpretations in this song title.

An exclamation about a lazy and stupid husband as in "My god! He is such a ROCK"

A song about the literal worship of rocks, as in "A mighty fortress is our ROCK" or "Nearer my ROCK to Thee".

Hi, Mary - I'll vouch for Judy Cook's singing. I met her at several Folklore Society of Greater Washington gatherings when I was working in DC last year in March, and I saw her again at the Getaway in October. She has one heck of a powerful voice, and her interpretation of songs is excellent. You can learn a bit more about her at her Website (click). I first heard "My God He Is A Rock" and A Mother's Last Words to her Daughter and DWELLING IN BEULAH LAND from her, and I've added all three to my repertoire. I also like her renditions of THE PRICKILIE BUSH and CHICKENS IN THE GARDEN.
Judy has a nice CD out, and it's available from Folk-Legacy and Camsco. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any of those five songs that I liked so much - but she says she has a second CD coming out.
If you look at about the Digital Tradition, you'll see that Judy's husband Dennis Cook was one of the original contributors to our database.

Hey, Joe:

We sing this in our Men's Chorus... at least a version of it. except it is:

Jesus is a rock in a weary land, a weary land, a weary land
Jesus is a rock in a weary land, a shelter in the time of storm

And then there is a half spoken section:

Has he ever made a way when you didn't have a dime?
Has he ever stepped in just right on time?
Has he ever picked you up when you were down?
Has he ever placed your feet on solid ground

And then you go into:

Then you know he is a rock in a weary land....

The song ends with the choir singing parts and answering each other, basically singing:

Jesus is a rock, and he is my shelter in the time of storm
Yeah!, in a weary land, a shelter in the time of storm

Our Chorus Director grew up in Mississippi and many of the songs we do are remembered from his childhood. Most are different than any texts I find in books..

Have no clue if this will be answered due to the age of the forum and last entry, but I am looking for the lyrics to the version of "Shelter In the Time of Storm" that starts out like this: "I travelled long and could not find . . . shelter in the time of storm; till Jesus came and eased my mind . . . shelter in the time of storm."

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Katina, it may help if you start a new thread called Shelter in the Time of Storm. Give a link to this thread (use Max's Make-a-Link feature) and state that you are NOT looking for any of the songs in this thread. :-)

I realize this thread is several years old but I can't resist commenting on Judy Cook.

Last winter a musician friend brought a couple of people along to our Friday night music. It was a husband and wife duo and they were great. Much more polished than we - and knew songs from beginning to end that we had never heard, and good, clear strong voices. They both looked familiar to me but I had no clue to that notion. They sang 'My God, He is a Rock', as well as several others before I caught on that they were from the Maryland/Virginia area, and on impulse I asked, Are you members of the FSGW? Surprised, they responded, Yes! I said, Did you go to the Getaway in 2004?

It was Judy and Dennis. I hadn't talked with either of them at the Getaway but I remembered them- I even remembered where they had sat at one of the concerts - you don't meet a beard like Dennis's every day!

Anyway I had a great time with them and the next evening we had another jam at my own home just a couple of houses away, and then they went to a 'slow jam' gathering the next day. Everybody enjoyed them
