Lyr/Chords: In the Hills of Shiloh (S Silverstein)

Subject: Hills of Shilo, Song of Shilalee
From: GUEST,babalooy

Hey! Looking for the original words to Hills of Shilo, or Amanda Brown. My mom used to sing it to us in the car when we were kids, so I only have a few key words left in my brain. age-sigh. Also, looking for the words to "Song of Shillalee", or maybe the "Yellow Shilalee"? Starts something like "Down in the streets is a dashing young man, and the song that he's singing so gaily". Again, vague memories from 20 years ago. Thanks to anyone who can help me! Sarah

IN THE HILLS OF SHILOH
(Shel Silverstein)
Have you seen Amanda Blaine in the hills of Shiloh
Wandering through the morning rain through the hills of Shiloh
Have you seen her at her door, listening for the cannon's roar
And a man who went to war from the hills of Shiloh

Have you heard her mournful cries in the hills of Shiloh
Have you seen her haunted eyes in the hills of Shiloh
Have you seen her running down searching through the sleeping town
In her yellowed wedding gown in the hills of Shiloh

Have you seen her standing there in the hills of Shiloh
Wind a-blowing through her hair in the hills of Shiloh
Listening for the sound of guns listening for the rolling drums
And a man who never comes to the hills of Shiloh

Have you heard Amanda sing in the hills of Shiloh
Whispering to her wedding ring in the hills of Shiloh
Hear her humming soft and low, poor Amanda doesn't know
'Twas ended forty years ago in the hills of Shiloh

From: Amos

PAT MURPHY OF MEAGHER'S BRIGADE

'Twas the night before battle and, gathered in groups,
The soldiers lay close at their quarters,
A-thinking, no doubt, of their loved ones at home
Of mothers, wives, sweethearts and daughters.

With a pipe in his mouth sat a handsome young blade,
And a song he was singing so gaily,
His name was Pat Murphy of Meagher's Brigade
And he sang of the land of Shillelagh.

Said Pat to his comrades, it looks quare to see
Brothers fighting in such a strange manner;
But I'll fight 'til I die, If I never get killed
For America's bright starry banner.

Far away in the west rode a dashing young blade
And the song he was singing so gaily,
'Twas honest Pat Murphy of the Irish Brigade
And the song of the splintered shillelagh.

Well, morning soon broke and poor Paddy awoke
He found rebels to give satisfaction
And the drummer was beating the Devil's sad tune
They were calling the troops into action.

Far away in the west rode a dashing young blade
And the song he was singing so gaily,
'Twas honest Pat Murphy of the Irish Brigade
And the song of the splintered shillelagh.

Then the Irish Brigade into battle was seen,
Their blood for the cause shedding freely
With their bayonet charges they rushed on the foe
With a shout for the land of shillelagh.

Far away in the west rode a dashing young blade
And the song he was singing so gaily,
'Twas honest Pat Murphy of the Irish Brigade
And the song of the splintered shillelagh.

The day after battle, the dead lay in heaps
And Paddy lay bleeding and gory,
With a hole in his breast where some enemy's ball
Had ended his passion for glory,

No more in the camps will his letters be read
Nor his voice be heard singing so gaily
For he died far away from the friends that he loved
And far from the land of shillelagh.

Shel Silverstein???? As in the children's author? I'm confused. Sorry, you're talking to a folksong dummy here! Please explain. My mom used to sing that song, I always assumed it was an old folk tune just passed down over the years! Can you enlighten me? Sinc, Baba

Weeeell, it was recorded by Judy Collins and copywrit by Shel Silverstein according to the Mudcat DB. It is possible, given the period, that a song that sounded a lot like a traditional one was actually a product of the 60's and Shel Silverstein certainly had the talent for it. Almost everything the early Judy Collins sang sounded like it had come down from the Highlands untouched for two hundred years :>)..
.

You could try a web-wide search and see if it comes up with more data.

Warm regards,.

I have "The HillsOf Shiloh" on a 1973 RCA allbum by Bobby Bare. The allbum is entitled "Lullabies,Legends and Lies". The Hills of Shiloh is credited to Shel Silverstein and Jim Friedman...... It's a double LP with some great songs; a truly great Folk Concept album.... As is mentioned in the liner notes, it's also available on """Stereo 8-Track""" (HO HO HO)....

Shel Silverstein - late, lamented children's author, Playboy cartoonist (and friend of Hugh Hefner) and songwriter.

Wrote "Hills of Shiloh", "Gold Buttons", "A Boy Named Sue" and just about every worthwhile song performed by Dr Hook.

Do a net search, look for the songbooks, and enjoy.

His best line? IMHO "I'm writing this song from inside a lion, It's warm in here, and damp, and lo-o-onely!"

Does anyone know the guitar chords to Shel Silverstein's In The Hills of Shiloh? It was recorded by Judy Collins on her Judy Collins # 3 album in the early 60's.
I moved this message here from another thread on the same topic.

I don't think I'd heard this tune before and the chords had me puzzled, but after closer examination the F#'s were a dead giveaway that this wasn't going to have trad chords in the key of A Minor. Normally I'd expect to see D Minor chords in a song of this sort, but Nope, they're just garden variety D chords.

The chords in the ABC version below are in " ".

Hi, Peter - we've found that one song, one thread is least confusing, so I combined your stuff into the previous thread on the song. I fixed your third link - I hope it directs to the right place now.
Nice job on the recording...although, 150 years after the Civil War, America is still not ready for the dance mix..... ;-)

That's a fine performance, Peter. It was a nice surprise that it's a duet, and the pace keeps it from being lugubrious.

I converted the ABC that John in Brisbane posted in 2004 at mandolintab's converter. The song is in the key of G, and its interesting soulful effect comes because it is in the Dorian mode. It starts on, ends on, and emphasizes the second note of the G scale, which is A.

That is why it has so many Am's and the occasional D. D fits right in the G scale.

Songs in the Dorian mode are rare nowadays. Even old dance tunes which start out in the Dorian seem to move to the tonic by the time the tune is over.

The portraits are from the Library of Congress. There is a lot of information there. In some cases the subjects of the portraits have been identified, and a number lived well into the 20th century. For me there is a certain dignity in the portraits. In those days people did not smile for the camera, partly due to the long exposure times but also because portraiture was a formal occasion.
