My mom used to sing it to us in the car when we were kids, so I only have a few key words left in my brain. age-sigh. Also, looking for the words to "Song of Shillalee", or maybe the "Yellow Shilalee"? Starts something like "Down in the streets is a dashing young man, and the song that he's singing so gaily". It is possible, given the period, that a song that sounded a lot like a traditional one was actually a product of the 60's and Shel Silverstein certainly had the talent for it. Almost everything the early Judy Collins sang sounded like it had come down from the Highlands untouched for two hundred years :>).. .
You could try a web-wide search and see if it comes up with more data. |

Wrote "Hills of Shiloh", "Gold Buttons", "A Boy Named Sue" and just about every worthwhile song performed by Dr Hook. Do a net search, look for the songbooks, and enjoy. His best line? The song is in the key of G, and its interesting soulful effect comes because it is in the Dorian mode. It starts on, ends on, and emphasizes the second note of the G scale, which is A. That is why it has so many Am's and the occasional D. D fits right in the G scale. Songs in the Dorian mode are rare nowadays. Even old dance tunes which start out in the Dorian seem to move to the tonic by the time the tune is over. |

In some cases the subjects of the portraits have been identified, and a number lived well into the 20th century. For me there is a certain dignity in the portraits. In those days people did not smile for the camera, partly due to the long exposure times but also because portraiture was a formal occasion. |
