Me again.

Is there anyone who knows of chantey singing in the Tampa / St. Petersburg / Duneden / Sarasota / Brandenton / Brandon / Ybor City area? I'm thinking of moving there and am looking for somekindred spirits.

Thanks

There used to be a place on Fort Harrison in Clearwater where a bunch of sailors would hang out, but I think it is defunct.

Only thing I knowabout Ybor City is they make fine seegars there, and they have a legacy of scarey ghost stories. Dun'no about chanty singers tho'.

You might try the site for Friends of Florida Folk.... http://www.foff.org/ they ought to have information about what goes on in the areas you are interested in. Dunedin tends towards bagpipes, actually, but there are several places in the Clearwater/ St.Petersburg/ Tampa/ Dunedin area etc. that do live folk music... there's also a place in Sarasota called The Sailing Squadron... you may want to check that out as well - I don't actually know how much music they do there, but I have been to a couple of "sea chantey" type performances there in the past, both of which included an open mic before the show. There are other folk music venues in Sarasota also. Good luck!

If you're thinking fo moving to Fla, why not come down Memorial Day weekend to the Florida Folk Festival. You'll get to meet a lot of Florida musicians and could certainly make a few contacts from the Tampa area. Get in touch with the Friends of Florida Folk. They can fill you in on the particulars.
