Emily, The announcement is about a sean-nós (traditional) singing weekend in Dublin (cois Life, beside the river Liffey) 30 March - 2 April. They have practical singing workshops and singing sessions. The workshops are given through the medium of Irish, so you have to be reasonably fluent to benefit from it. Therefore it is appropriate to make the announcement in Irish. But I do wish the Guest had given a name, besides the title of the event!

Here is some info in english about Sean-Nós Cois Life.

Sean-Nós Cois Life 2000
Our main week-end of events will run from

30th March - 2nd April 2000

and we have invited the following singers to lead sean-nós singing classes for adults (Cost £16; Tape and words of songs provided) :
Eibhlín Ní Chearnaigh (Corca Dhuibhne),
Caitlín Ní Dhomhnaill (Tír Chonaill),
Áine Bn. Mhaitiú (Conamara),
Meaití Joe Shéamais Ó Fatharta (Conamara),
Those without any previous knowledge of sean-nós singing are welcome, although those with some fluency in Irish will benefit most from the classes/workshops.
The emphasis is on Irish language traditional singing but there are many events throughout the festival which are bilingual (Irish/English).

We shall also provide a class for children during the week-end with

Celia Ní Fhátharta (Conamara)
as tutor (Cost £5; Tape and words of songs provided).

A lecture/recital will be given titled 'Amhráin Oirialla' by Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin.

A session will be organised each night of the festival in a different venue. Amongst the singers and musicians who have been invited to take part are the following :

Áine Uí Laoithe (Ciarraí),
Éilís Tóibín (An Rinn)
Eileen O'Brien-Minogue (Fiddle)
Deirdre Mc Sherry (Flute)
as well as many other performers. Some of these sessions will be bi-lingual.

Pádraig Ó Duithche and Pádraig Ó Coirbín (Corr na Móna), will perform 'agallaimh bheirte' and 'lúibíní' (a form of reply-verse and reply-song which can often be quite funny and topical) and

Annie Devane O'Brien (Conamara) will lead sean-nós dancing classes (Cost £16).

Many of these artists seldom perform in Dublin.

At a reception each year we present a specially commissioned sculpture from the hand of artist Clíodhna Cussen, to someone who we feel has in some way enriched the singing tradition.

We also organise a number of sessions and concerts throughout the year inviting various singers and musicians from different regions of Ireland to partake.

Further information and full programme of events can be had from :

Dear Emily

The "big kid" (apt description, too!) is one Antaine ó Faracháin, who is heavily involved in organising the festival he describes above - and is no mean singer himself! A Forum search on "sean nos" should turn up some earlier threads as to what it's all about.

Regards
