15 Feb 00 - 06:36 AM (#178631) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: GUEST, Bob Bolton (at home) G'day Albatross, Does anyone know how a band stays together long enough to record without murder and mayhem? As I have always said: A band is an unnatural act! Regard(les)s, Bob Bolton |

15 Feb 00 - 07:54 AM (#178653) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: Callie Ain't got the answer, but here's another (related?) question. Are Planxty and Moving Hearts the same band? Are Moving Hearts still around? And are they the olny band to ever have doubled fiddle and saxophone? Callie |
15 Feb 00 - 08:13 AM (#178657) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: Mbo I think Moving Hearts was a Donal Lunny thing...They weren't the same band exactly...I don't believe they are in business anymore--but if you're liking the fiddle/sax combo, try the band Anam--they're pretty cool! --Mbo |
15 Feb 00 - 08:23 AM (#178661) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: Callie Thanks! I'll keep an ear or two out for them. I assume they're Irish? Callie |
15 Feb 00 - 08:35 AM (#178667) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: Mbo Actually, they are from ALL OVER THE PLACE! Check out their website here. There's a RA sample of their Cornish Gavottes on the Music page--that's where they get the saxes out. Enjoy! --Mbo |

15 Feb 00 - 09:00 AM (#178689) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: Midchuck Maybe when they recorded Norman Blake's Billy Gray under the title of True Love Knows no Season, without (as I understand it) giving him any credit, much less royalties, he got mad and threatened to come over there and raise hell, and they all ran in various directions. Norman's little, but I wouldn't want to be the one to p*** him off. Peter. |
15 Feb 00 - 10:18 AM (#178732) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: GUEST,Den Moving Hearts had Christy Moore and Donal Lunny from Planxty. Thats pretty well the only connection between the two bands that I know. As far as Norman Blake not getting credit for his song which can be heard on the, "The woman I loved so well," album. I'm going from memory here as I am at work. I might look it up and post the direct quote later. But the liner notes say something about Christy Moore learning the song from Noel Shine and that it was written by Norman Blake. As far as royalties I can't say. I dont think that had anything to do with the demise of Planxty, as Christy Moore has had more serious death threats made against him I feel it would take more than that to make him run. I think that musically they began to go in different directions but even after the break up of the band they still guested on each other's solo projects. Den |
15 Feb 00 - 10:32 AM (#178741) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: GUEST,Mbo Why would ANYONE want to send Christy Moore death threats? The man's a master! --Mbo |
15 Feb 00 - 10:46 AM (#178753) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: Midchuck I was only trying to lighten the tension with sort of a joke. About Norman threatening anyone, I mean. And the only basis for my statement that Norman didn't get credit was that the local folk DJ played Planxty's recording of it with no mention of the correct title or of the correct author, and I thought he would have if there had been anything on the record about it. I should probably shut up if I don't have all the facts, but where's the fun in that? I have to do that too much in real life. Peter. |
15 Feb 00 - 12:04 PM (#178792) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: GUEST,Den I heard an interview with Luka Bloom (Christy's brother)a number of years ago talking about one of his songs on his first album who's title escapes me but the song was inspired by Christy and freedom of speach. Christy's politics have made him unpopular with a certain segment of society in Ireland over the years apparently, he didn't elaborate. My sentiments exactly Mbo its entirely too bad that ill health has caused him to retire once more from live performances. Den |
15 Feb 00 - 12:15 PM (#178797) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: GUEST,Neil Comer Unfortunately, my theory about Planxty's untimely demise is slightly more cynical. Paul Brady joined Planxty in the late Seventies, then several months later, the band split. They re-formed to make the Album ( minus Brady), After the Break, but then split again. When Christy Moore was honoured on the Late Late Show, neither Paul Brady nor Andy Irvine ( the latter being one of the original Planxties) were present. I sense a fall-out. Call me cynical if you want, but musicians are infamous for the temperment. |
15 Feb 00 - 12:23 PM (#178801) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: GUEST,Den Neil, Andy has played on a number of Christy's albums over the years though (after the break up of Planxty). I think Christy was the first long serving member to leave and the band was on its way to splitting at that point. Did they record an album with Paul Brady? (curious, couldn't remember). Den |

15 Feb 00 - 06:10 PM (#178957) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: GUEST,PJ Curtis Donal Lunny was the first to depart the band in early '74 to co-found the Bothy band in 1975. Christy Moore was next to go to be replaced by Johnny Moynihan and Paul Brady. Brady never recorded with them. The reformed Planxty 0f 1979 had Matt Molloy on flute and Bill(Riverdance)Whelan on K-brds and recorded the fantastic After The Break for Tara. Why did they disband in '76? Ask Polydor...their label of the time. PJ Curtis. |
16 Feb 00 - 02:43 AM (#179271) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: Ana I guess it's like any relationship - what happens behind closed doors is really only known to those there (and sometimes even they can be oblivious). So what leads to separations - betrayal/addictions/abuse..sometimes just simple things like divergent philosophies and life directions. It shouldn't really matter to those of us "outside". Ana |
16 Feb 00 - 02:45 AM (#179272) Subject: RE: Help: why did Planxty disband? From: GUEST,Paddy Roberts I was talking to Andy Irvine at the Woodford Folk Festival (Australia) between Christmas and New Year. It was a pleasure to meet him and tell him about how often we had played Planxty tapes on our journey across the Nullarbor in '75. Andy gave a workshop and gave the impression that it was more the pursuit of different interests that lead to the break up than any animosity. |
