Thank you for the new tweak in the forum search. It is now possible to go to either the single post or the whole thread.

Thanks Shambles. Unfortunately, I may have to turn off the SuperSearch until we can afford some new hardware. The Mudcat is more popular than ever and we run into serious problems during peak hours. If purchasing new hardware is not an option, our only choice is to eliminate those functions that take the longest to process, and the SuperSearch is certainly first to go. We are going to make a decision on this within a week.

BTW,

...am I the last earthling to learn that we can split our browsers into multiple windows and be at the Cafe twice or more at once? Thus permitting one screen to do long page-loadings while the other lets you zip around in the current threads?

I also keep a narrow window open with members' names listed so I can see if the guests are members posting from work, etc.

Am I the only one who is thinking about spell checking in my word processor before posting?

I know this is off-topic but I really wanted to know and I figured everyone would look at this thread, and if anyone doesn't know they can do these things then they are spending a lot of time loading up pages when they could be issuing and receiving more snappy repartee....

Agggggh!! Don't lose features!!!

Could you generate an index for more rapid searching instead of regenerating the whole search process? Maybe at least a "most common searches " datatable? I imagine it is reading the disk that is time intensive, no? Or otherwise limit it (for example to whole string only hits)?

A

Max, how much would it take for hardware to maintain the SuperSearch?

Praise?

Is your connection really that slow that a page loading takes that long?
I don't know that I've ever had occasion to have multiple windows open except for the odd time I "Open Link In New Window" rather than lose the current page...
I guess it's just a different style of browsing eh?!?

Clinton,

The longer threads and some searches can take awhile, as can the links people blue-clicky in that go to other picture-laden sites. Also this way I can be doing some Helping in one screen, building blue clickies, while doing some maintenance in the other. Or I might be surfing around researching something in one screen while leaving requesting post and its thread open in the other for reference.

My connection is not just slow, altho it is, but I like to multi-task. Sometimes it's handy to have the list of keywords open in one window while I look at and play songs in another one. Other times I might be working on a reply or personal message that I want to word especially carefully and do it a little at a time, as the thoughts come, while looking at other stuff.

Works for me, I recommend it.

I usually have three or four windows open, one searching, one reading threads, one updating threads, and sometimes two to a dozen more......at home, more windows, as I start 5 or 6 downloading, then go back, and read one, open a new one, etc...., plus the windows for hotbot, google, abc finder, midi finder, etc.

and at work, the e-mail, work order software, network administration, network overview, etc.

Well, I had to do it. The SuperSearch is closed, probably until we get a chance to upgrade our hardware. It's just too busy, the server freeks out when more than 25 or so people are all requesting something at once, and we are now regularly hitting that number and then some. When faced with this, the first line of defense is to eliminate the queries that take the longest, and that is the SuperSearch.

Closing it will allow me to see if it is THE cause of the backup or just A cause.

Sorry everybody, I will certainly be thinking my ass off to find a way around this.

Max, I would be willing to give you all of the 2 grand you need, if you set up another forum dedicated to what this one was supposed to be for....that being discussions exclusively dedicated to FOLK MUSIC and BLUES and purely music and instrument-related issues.

...In it's present form, I think all the funding you require should come from all those that dominate it with their menusia...and you know damn well who you are...

..sorry M'am, I wouldn't contribute money to read yours and a few others' frequent postings here. They are what's keep the real contributors from accessing and participating in this Forum and responsible for the great decline in what used to be a real wonderful resource..

..Good for you though. You should be paying for the privilege of posting here...

HI Garg, Welcome back! We're SO glad you're willing to put your money where your mouth is. I am proud to contribute to a real community. And, if you think none of us have anything to contribute, and this is a useless forum, why do you keep lurking just to get our ire up? It ain't gonna work, kid.

Hey there, Grumpy Guest(s)...sometimes when hanging out with fellow folkie-bluesers in a face-to-face way, I've noticed that we chat about everything under the sun. Just like the songs touch our hearts about everyting under the sun.

My $ 0.02 for U.

Max,

I deleted my bookmark to the old forum search which worked only on the subject (but that's better than nothing!) Is that still up? And if so, where?

Sure enough, the analysis of last nights traffic has determined that the SuperSearch is kicking our ass. Not only is it burdening to the Mudcat Hardware, but also my entire companies bandwidth. OK, I'm gonna get creative and try to figure something out here. In the meantime, help us figure out how to raise money. Thanks all.
