I need info on Lightnin' Hopkins

Hello,

Myself and my Father are trying to put a Blues duo together and we have a few Lightnin Hopkins albums between us. We would like to perform some of his music but I'm having great trouble finding information on him on the web. Does anyone know of anywhere I can get hold of some good stuff on him? I live in the UK but I am prepared to contact anyone worldwide to obtain any information on him.

Many thanks,

Tigerboy.

Man, I love Lightnin'. There really isn't much on the web. I'll update if I find any more.

There's a little essay here:

Here's another:

Les Blanc made a marvelous documentary film on Lightin' Hopkins back in the early 1970s. If you could find a copy, you'd learn a lot about him. It was funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Washington, D.C. I have no idea how to obtain a copy though.

Amazon  has it. Go there and search for Lightnin Hopkins. It's called "Blues Accordin to Lightnin Hopkins" and sells for $49.99. They say it usually ships in 4-6 weeks. Make sure to go through The Mudcat if you get it.

Even better, get it from CAMSCO. There's another Lightning Hopkins (at least in part) CD in which 23 cuts are shared with Cklifton Chenier and Mance Lipscomb. It's Arhoolie 484, and Lightning does:

If You Don't Want Me; I Feel So Good; Last Night: Mojo Hand; Black Cadillac; Short Haired Woman and Lightning's Boogie. $13.94.

Dick: Now you may have allowed doubt to creep into my feeble old mind. Maybe the film I referred to was about Mance Lipscombe rather than Lightnin' Hopkins. I worked at the NEA at the time so I should remember but ... Anyway, Tigerboy, you should have a starting place now.

I haven't seen it, but it looks like it's the one. It was by Les Blank in 1969. There's some info on it, including some stuff about Lightnin'  here at Les Blank's website . By all means, do buy it from CAMSCO.

You would probably really enjoy Sleepy John Estes as well, check out his recording on the Yazoo label. I think Lightnin' and Sleepy John must have been fishin' in the same honey-hole if you get my drift...! I have a really cool and very old Lightnin' album on an obscure label, all acoustic too. I think it was one of those " revival" things. See me if you would like to know more about it, Dave.
