Mmmm... The Big Music...

think of pibrochs as the 'Classical' music for pipes... Pibrochs (and one other?) are called Big Music, while jigs, reels, ect ect are refered to as Small Music...

Gotta love a good Pibroch!

A form of music for the Scottish bagpipes involving elaborate variations on a theme, typically of martial or funerary character. Well, thats the OED definition anyway...says it comes from the Scots Gaelic word "piobaireachd", the term for the art of piping. I knew it had somethin to do with the pipes. hmm...maybe too formal a response to be much help?

Clinton's answer is a good one!

A "pibroch" is a theme with a set of variations, usually martial, but also including dirges for the bagpipes. The fourth stanza of Lochnagarr, lyric by Lord Byron who was Scot on his mother's side, reads:

Ill-starr'd though brave, did no visions foreboding/ Tell you that fate had forsaken your cause?/ Ah, were you destined to die at Culloden,/ Victory crown'd not your fall with applause:/ Still were you happy in death's early slumber,/ You rest with your clan in the caves of Braemar; /The pibroch resounds to the piper's loud number,/ Your deeds on the echoes of dark Lochnaggar.

Right definition, but pib's are usually reserved for contests because of the length. Only the judges can understand and differentiate all the variations (and other pipers, of course). Is the "small music" "mhor-brach"(sic)?

Ah, yes...piobaireachd! Does anyone remember the "Amazing Piobaireachd Naming Contest" I staged last year? No one knew what a piobaireachd was back then! Check out the threads "The Amazing Piobaireachd Naming Contest" and "FYI:More on Those Pesky Piobaireachds" for more information that I supplied that other obviously found of no interest. BTW I have written an 8-minute piobaireachd of my own....and it's still unnamed! As I said before "PIOBAIREACHDS REACHD!"

I LIKE PIOBAIREACHDS! I dont claim to be able to hear all the variations, but whenever I manage to get to Highland Games, I try hard to listen to the pipe contest. I will admit that I like Irish pipes just a tad better than Highland, but any pipes are fine with me! (spaw, don't say it!)I like hammered dulcimers too, for some things, but they are so "fairy tinkly" on a lot of stuff that I don't listen a lot. SO THERE!

Okay, guys--deep breaths now, pleeee-zzzzz?

Guest TRC, did you get an answer you could use before this went into warp drive thread leap? Personally, I appreciated the info, Clinton, Pastorpest, Sabra, Sorcha--I've heard the term "pibroch" many times, and assumed it had something to do with bagpipes, but that was the extent of my knowledge. Now I'm a little smarter, and I thank you.

Mbo, you amaze me--you sing, you write, you play, you compose, you paint, you roadie, you post (incessantly)...now if we could only gently persuade you to shut up and LISTEN once in awhile! You wear me out! Mellow out for awhile, okay? Take a nap or something. You're far too young to be that much of an overachiever...Sheesh!

Mbo's real problem is LON, Lack of Nookie. Don't be too hard on the boy, this is serious. Mbo, I have a 15 yr. old daughter that has seen your pic and thinks you are cute. Granted, 15 to 20 is a stretch, but 20-25 is not. She can sing, she can write lyrics and occasionally compose a melody. Right now she has serious 15 yr old PMS/ATTITUDE problems, but can you hang in there? I would be happy to arrange something in a year or two.
PS--her mother thinks she is beautiful.....5'3", brown eyes, 36C, hair subject to change, right now it is red and blue. Will send a pic to bbc along with mine, whenever I get that done. DON'T DESPAIR, THEY ARE OUT THERE!

Mbo, you just go right on overacheiving darlin', as long as you're takin care of yourself.(does sort of wear me out tryin to keep up sometimes tho, but its fun!)
HEY Sorcha? I have a 16 yr old son with green/bleached blonde hair if Mbo doesn't wanna wait?

I agree, this thread has been interesting--until I looked it up today I wasnt exactly sure what a pibroch was either, only that on Jethro Tull's LP "Songs from the Wood" there is a song entitled "Pibroch-Cap in Hand". Thanks for your input all you real experts.

SENDING PIC SOON!! She is Sagitarius, born 12/04/84 at 10:34 PM in Evanston,Wy. (run it yourself!) She was born knowing how to be a Bitch, didn't have to learn it, but she can be a real sweetie, if you sneak it by her. I am all in favor of "arrangements", but Sabra, let;s not tell her about your son, we need to keep this "green hair stuff" to a minimum, although I will admit to threatining to cut mine to 1" and dyeing it green just to "Get" to my Dobro player who said I Couldn't!

I'm working on getting to Edinburgh during Festival this summer-On Aug 5th they are having a big Y2k piper's celebration and intend to amass 10,000 pipers for a performance. Anyone care to speculate
A) How long that parade would be?
or
B)How many European mainland countries the event will be heard in? (W/O amplification?)

It's a slow lament often played at graveside --- as in the "THE FLOWERS OF THE FOREST" which was played on bagpipe during the graveside service for John F. Kennedy. (for real)

I love "Pibroch: Cap in Hand" by Tull...very evocative song. Songs From the Wood was my favorite album all through high school (still is kinda), and at one time I had myself convinced "Pibroch" was a thinly-veiled teenage boy's masturbation fantasy (and of course this thread probably caused me to remember that!)
In college a friend and I used the little "pibroch" interlude in the song as the accompaniment to a choreography assignment in ballet class (folk steps mostly)...

if anyone is interested:

it's an article I wrote analyzing the Celtic/pagan imagery in his songs...

Thanks, Art, for adding another bit of knowledge to the (horridly few) brain cells I have left.

And I remember sobbing, along with the rest of the nation, when that song was played...way too many years and dreams ago.

Peg...
Fellow Tullite...
Most of Songs From The Wood, and indeed alot of Ian's songwriting is "thinly-veiled teenage boy's masturbation fantasy"!! LOL!! One of the reasons I like them so much...

Have you seen this site Cup Of Wonder??

I only have one Tull CD, and Songs from the Wood is it..I suppose you could say that LP was really my introduction to Celtic Music (I was also in high school when I discovered it,Peg)and once I had a wee taste,I simply had to go searching for the roots from whence it came.
