If that doesn't work, maybe try the other end. I am fairly sure that the small holes along the length are for fingering not blowing.;-) Sorry, I wasn't going to post this, but I'm just so full of piss and vinegar today...I didn't even bother trying to resist. |

From: Homeless Having learned the hard way (by trying to play songs right off) I would suggest starting with scales and rhythm. Only tongue every third note (for jigs) or fourth note (for reels). Run both scales availble on the whistle you have. Both octaves of the lower scale. When you have that down, start on arpeggios. I was playing for a few months before I heard a recording of myself and realized that all my notes were run together and sounded like mush. I'm still trying to get an accent in my breath so that there is a beat to the music - and I've had to unlearn all my songs in the process. Or were you actually looking for the mechanics of playing - fingering, breathing, overblowing, etc? |

A music/instrument shop with a bit of self respect should be able to provide. If they don't have any books in store, ask them to order one for you. One I can recommend (it's the only one I know of!) is Mel Bay's Complete Irish Tin Whistle Book. Lots of hints and help, and a lot of nice well-known tunes. Ths ISBN number is : ISBN 0-7866-2318-7. Personally, I think learning by ear is a good way to go about it. Find tunes that aren't too fast to begin with, and move on to the faster ones as you get better. That way you will hear what the grace notes sound like, and you get a better "feel" for the music. Om du vil , kan du sende meg en personlig melding. From: Lady McMoo A very good tutor is The Irish Tin Whistle (I think that's the title - I've mislaid my copy) by Geraldine Colfer published by Ossian publications.
