Chuck Berry did several that would fit — Mabeline (SP?), The Jaguar and the Thunderbird and a couple of others that won't come to mind right now. They're all on the 3-CD set that's on the market right now.

The Terror of Highway 101
Jerry Lee Lewis's "Crown Victoria"
There's a blue — can't remember who did it — called "Rocket 88"
The Beach Boys did several completely forgetable songs about cars (which I have dutifully forgotten)
Bruce Springsteen wrote a song (the version I have is by Johnny Cash) about a Michigan State Trooper chasing his ne'r-do-well brother to the Canadian border.

One of the funniest fast-car songs of all times is Ray Stevens's "The Day I Taught Charlene McKenzie How To Drive."

cheers,

david

A minor classic of the genre is David Lindley's version of K.C. Douglas' 'Mercury Blues' on his El Rayo-X album, and Terry Allen's 'Wolfman of Del Rio' on his 'Lubbock on Everything' album is not without its charm - or relevance in this context.

"90 miles an hour..., etc." is from a song of that title by the late, great Hank Snow.

George Hamilton IV had a cute little tune on the flip side of "Rose and a Baby Ruth" called "If You Don't Know, I Ain't Gonna Tell You", all about a young man getting wise, getting into the moonshine business, and (naturally) getting all the chicks.

James.

OH MAN! You folks gotta hear Kathy Mattea do "455 Rocket." Yeah! What a great song...awesome blues harp and acoustic dobro in that one! "I heard the angles singin', and it sounded like the Beach Boys...and the cop asked me 'Ma'am, just what'd you have IN that thing?'" Classic!

Check out pretty much any Meatloaf album! Not exactly folk, but some are feasible acoustically. The Beach Boys "Fun fun fun till her daddy takes her T-Bird away" (anyone know of a parody of that BTW? sounds like a tune dying for a piss-take).And of course, there's the classic "Convoy".

Bert, I think the title of that one is "Beep Beep". And perhaps the grand-daddy of them all is "Hot Rod Race", to which "Hot Rod Lincoln" was an answer song.

Fast Car - Tracy Chapman

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere

Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
But me myself I got nothing to prove

You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
We won't have to drive too far
Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
And finally see what it means to be living

You see my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
I say his body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did

You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so we can fly away
We gotta make a decision
We leave tonight or live and die this way

I remember we were driving, driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
And we go cruising to entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a big house and live in the suburbs

You got a fast car
And I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving

You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so you can fly away
You gotta make a decision
You leave tonight or live and die this way

Hey, I've got one no one's mentioned yet, "Diesel Smoke And Dangerous Curves" by Billy Strange. This is one I've been meanin' to add to my list of favorite songs I love to perform. It's about an out of control truck going too fast down a steep grade because the driver fell asleep at the wheel from being up too long the night before entertaining some dangerous curves. I've got it on a 78 rpm around here somewhere. It was damaged, cracked and broken but nevertheless a fine example of speeding down the road.

"Drivin' that truck down a mountain road,
got a hotrod rig and I'm flyin' low,
my eyes are filled with diesel smoke,
hairpin turns ain't no joke,
diesel smoke, dangerous curves."

Then there's Rusty Draper's 1956 recording with the Halloran Singers of "Pink Cadillac", I regularly perform this rockabilly hit.

"It's got four carbuerators and a hydramatic drive and I'm tearin' down Main at a hundred and five."

I agree Mbo! 455 Rocket sung by Kathy Matea, I think is a classic. The video clip of the song was nothing short of sensational! I saw it about three or four years ago on CMT. The best car video clip that I've seen. I wish it would come on the CMC channel, again!

How about Chuck Berry "You Can't Catch Me" great song which was also covered by the Rolling Stones, another car song is "Crazy 'bout an Automobile" which I heard from Ry Cooder. I can't believe Fortunato forgot about "Hot Rod Man" by his old buddy Tex Rubinowitz and the Bad Boys, and a rip off of that song "Hot Rod Gang by the Stray Cats.

There is a good video clip of the song 'Addicted to Bass' - the original version - which was about a couple of ladies in a fast car, who take off with the loot from a bank heist. I've recently seen a new clip which is quite different. The song is not in itself about fast cars.

This does not appear to be in Digitrad, so...

Nash Rambler song

Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep
While riding in my Cadillac
What to my surprise
A little Nash Rambler was following me
About one third my size
The guy musta wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn
Ill show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

I pushed my foot down to the floor
To give the guy the shake
But the little Nash Rambler stayed right behind
He still had on his brake
He musta thought his car had more guts
As he kept on tooting his horn
Ill show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

My car went into passing gear
And we took off with gust
Soon we were going ninety
Musta left him in the dust
When I peeked in the mirror of my car
I couldnt believe my eyes
The little Nash Rambler was right behind
Youd think that guy could fly
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

Now we were doing a hundred and ten
This certainly was a race
For a Rambler to pass a Caddy
Would be a big disgrace
The guy musta wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn
Ill show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

Now were going a hundred twenty
As fast as I can go
The Rambler pulled along side of me
As if we were going slow
The fella rolled down his window
And yelled for me to hear
Hey buddy how do I get this car outa second gear?

I thought "90 miles an hour down a dead end-street" was from a Dylan song.

There's also MGB-GT by Richard Thompson
"2 in the front, 2 in the back, 110 down the old Hog's Back" (which is a straight stretch on the A31 near Guildford)

Chuck in my Car

I was drivin' in my automobile last night
Turnin' up my radio to rock 'n roll loud
You know the way it is sometimes when you stop at a red light
And some dude wants to burn you up
Now, I don't usually bother with guys like this
But when he sneered at me I couldn't resist
Sayin' "OK, pal, let 'er rip
I've got Chuck in my car"

CH
I've got Chuck in my car
I've got Chuck in my car
I think you pushed your luck just a bit too far
I've got Chuck in my car

Well, he got away first in a cloud of burning rubber
But he crashed his gears, so I took him in third
I knew that I could hold him 'cause the road was real narrow
So I turned up the music and flew like a bird
I flashed by a sign by the side of the road
That said "Dangerous bend, go slow"
But all I could hear was the sound of my motor
And Chuck saying "Go, go, go!"

CH

As I came around the bend he was right on my tail
So I decided to do something rash
I flashed him a victory sign and took a sharp left
And all I recall was the crash
And a cop standing there with a torch in my face
By now Chuck was in no particular place
But I ended up as a hospital case
With Chuck in my car

Since several people have mentioned songs that were about trucks, rather than fast cars, I figured I'd throw in this one about a motorcycle (and a *typical?* rider):

"He wore black denim trousers, and motorcycle boots, and a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back...that fool was 'The Terror of Highway 101'--

And a whole bunch of C.W. McCall songs about trucks, including his classic "Wolf Creek Pass," where the narrator and Earl are headed at horrendous speed down the hill with a load of frightened chickens, straight through a tunnel at the bottom of the hill. "I looked at Earl, and his eyes was wide, his teeth was clenched, and his leg was fried..."
