I feel a little immodest posting this, but anyone is welcome to attend. This is the 3rd performance of a Christian coffeehouse group--6 members from our church in NY & 3 from another church in NJ. It is led by our choir director, who is a school music teacher. There are 2 sets to the concert--1 is rock & the other is non-rock. David & I do vocals in the non-rock set & Duane does vocals & plays guitar or harmonica. I'll be singing lead on 1 song. Not what you'd call a career, but we're enjoying it. The 1st 2 concerts were in small coffeehouses & I would have had trouble giving directions. This one is at our church. It's large enough for people to come & it's free.

The concert is this Saturday, March 11, 2000 from 7:30-9 pm at the Yorktown (NY)(USA) Church of the Nazarene, 1243 White Hill Road, Yorktown Heights, NY (914) 245-4718. It is about 1 hr N of NYC & is just off the Taconic Parkway. If you'd like to come & need directions, just send me email.

best,

bbc

best of luck! Nothing "immodest" about it, why NOT let people know what you are doing?

I am forced to assume there are pictures forthcoming? Some of us would like to see the group and I don't know if you're familiar with it, but under the "Quick Links" there is one called "bbc's Mudcat Resources" and if you submit photos they can be included for all to see. I'm sure your group would qualify since there is even a picture of a clay possum included, not to mention one of some arsehole with a telescope.

A tape sent to Max would be a nice touch too. Best of luck, you don't need it, I'm sure you'll be great!

Actually, spaw, I wasn't planning on photos. After all, we'll all be up on stage. Thanks for your good wishes. As it happens, we really *do* need them! Half the kids at my school have 5th Disease at the moment & I'm guessing I've just come down w/ it--the beginning upper respiratory symptoms. David's still coughing from his last cold & Duan'e not at 100% health, either. It's been a heck of a winter for us. How *do* those of you who perform regularly deal w/ colds, flu, etc. & still manage to sing?

Good luck to you bbc. Knock 'em dead! It is hard to sing with colds and such, I suggest a quantity of brandy before you go on.

Best of luck, bbc-- I don't think I can make it from down here, but I'll be supporting you nevertheless. Please let us know how it turns out. My wife, who was trained in opera, says that she can sing over a throat problem, but I've never been too successful at it. In nearly thirty years of performing I have had to cancel only one performance. You'll make it, and you'll be great.

Bbc - HAVE FUN! And quit getting sick, OK?

Now, I know y'all can't take pictures of yourselves while you're on stage, but doesn't David have one of those little mini-disc recorders? (hehehe...)

All the very best!

To get photos: enlist a stranger (or friend) from an aisle seat near the front. Hand them your camera loaded with at least 24 exposures. If there are more cameras in your group, have 2 or 3 going. Each photographer probably feels less nervous thinking that someone else will get the good shots.

The second rule of volunteer recruitment: Tell them what you need, e.g. a few shots of the whole group, and some shots of individuals. (The first rule is "ASK FOR HELP!) If they look a little blank or panicky, tell them to take each picture from a different angle. Walk away purposefully before they can argue. If they catch you before you can escape, the failsafe instruction: if in doubt, snap twice.

It worked for me at my wedding: no budget for a photographer or videographer, so we borrowed a VCR, bought lotsa film for our camera. Then we simply took our guests for granted: handed the video to one, the still to another, and said "try to get a shot of everyone. The results are spontaneous and personal, and our friends are still talking to us 10 years later.

(Yes, one photo of the bride & groom has a tree growing out of the bride's head, but this just might explain my back troubles...and my head troubles...)

Do like the pros do. Lots of film, lots of pictures, 3,4,5 rolls. There'll be a few keepers. Don't pay for processing when you buy the film. That way you don't pay for pictures of the ceiling, the lens cap, etc.

Awww, go for it. Pictures are great and the gang will love to have copies no matter how they turn out.

The love of the whole Mudcat is with you all!

Barbara,

Good luck to all of you. When you gotta sing and you have a cold, treat the symptoms. Don't buy one of those shotgun remedies. Think about what's interfering with your singing. If your nose is dripping on your guitar, you need a decongestant. If you throat is all mucousy, you need an expectorant. If your throat is sore, ease it with warm tea. Don't use any mentholyptus cough drops. They are much to severe. If you are coughing, try a cough suppresant.

Let us all know how it goes tonight! And remember, you always sound better than you think you do. I did an open mike last night. I felt it was only a fair job, but I received some compliments and many encouragements to come again!

Well, here's the latest report--When I called our leader to tell him how we are doing, he told me that one of our 3 main female vocalists has no voice today & that he's changed the whole program for tonight. Jokingly, he said I'd be doing all of her lead & back-up parts. Ha! That's in the rock set. Not for me.

Thank you all for your comments, support, suggestions. Yes, Jeri, David does have a mini-disc recorder. We recorded the previous concert, but set it incorrectly & it distorted. This time, we can plug directly into the sound system & we'll see what we get. Crowhugger, we have a digital camera that cost several hundred dollars, so (as much as we love the folks at our church) we don't hand it off to just anyone. We have a couple of people in mind who we might trust to snap a couple of shots. They would end up on my homepage or my Mudcat photo page. This is not, after all, a Mudcat event. I like your comment, Big RiB, about sounding better. When I've heard my voice recorded, I thought I'd better just give it up completely! It's really nice to hear from you, my friends. Despite all our symptoms, we're looking forward to tonight & I'll give you a report on how it goes.

love,

Barbara

Hi, I'm here. We were at church all this a.m. & now have to play catch-up again before work tomorrow. Duane & our female vocalist w/ no voice played their instruments. Our(new)drummer finally showed up about 1/2 hr. before the concert. He was great, but there was no time for sound check & going through songs. As a result, the balance between instruments & vocals was somewhat off, w/ the drums & electric bass winning. Rumor has it, in the 2nd set (ours), they got it adjusted somewhat better. I got through the set without coughing (Thanks, Dr. RiB!). My lead went well (Our leader says the harmony was "sweet"), but I think it would have sounded better at a slightly faster tempo. Guess I ought to learn to accompany myself! David recorded the whole concert & thinks he got a decent recording, but I haven't heard it yet. I was going to get a few pictures of the group after the concert, but our digital camera was acting up & I thought we were out of luck. As it happens, one of our church ladies also had a digital & brought in prints this am. When she gets one to me, I *may* post it. If so, I'll let you know. We had the usual problems--cables & mikes acting up, too many people sharing a small space (9 of us), I felt like I really flubbed my intro, but when I acted to not talk any more, they just smiled at me. No new concerts for now. I think I need to make more suggestions for new folk songs to add to the set. The 1st set was so amplified that we actually lost some of the audience. Thanks for all your input & interest. I'm not quitting my day job. :)

What songs did you sing?

Thanks for asking. I can't give proper credit for them, but here are the song titles from our set: Out of His Great Love, Seize the Day, Wings of a Dove (the one I sing lead on), Stand Your Ground, By the Rivers of Babylon, I Have Decided, Agnus Dei, & Don't Hide the Light. I heard part of the mini-disc recording that David made & it sounds pretty good. Since it was just our 3rd performance together, it still feels kind of like rehearsal. We have some rough edges, but some things seem to work each time & I hope we are improving. I think the audience enjoyed it & so did we.

Hi, folks,

One last note--a woman from the church did take some photos & made a copy of one for me. I have added it to my photo page at the resources site. Two members of our group are not in this particular photo--our electric bass player & his wife, a talented keyboard & guitar player, vocalist, & composer. As it happens, they are both blind. It's really a pleasure to be working with the group!

best on the eve of Spring in North America (my birthday!),
