Tune Req: She Is Far from the Land (Thomas Moore)

Having had no luck with a request for "Bantry Bay", I thought it would make sense to try something harder. Does anyone have the sheet music for "She Is Far From the Land" or piano chords? This is a Thomas Moore song, sung by John McCormack, and most recently by the 3 Irish Tenors (it's coming back folks!!!) yours, Peter T. I have the lyrics....

Well, Peter, haven't had luck yet. I did a search for "irish tenors she is far from the land" and came up with these really neat Holstein and Guernsey things. Who wants to talk about songs, when cows are so much more interesting?
I'll get back to you on the music stuff....
Lesley has the song on the Contemplator site (click). You can print out that MIDI as sheet music, Can't you?

Dear Joe, Thanks, I can try -- it always crashes my computer! I suspect that the Contemplator site version is not the modern version -- the one I am looking for is by Lambert (whoever that was, not Constant Lambert, anyway). It is interesting that so famous a song is in none of the standard Irish music collections, the University music library, etc. -- but I had the same trouble with my friend's request for Bantry Bay also. Maybe everything has been pushed aside by Riverdance. yours, Peter T.

Peter - Click here for just the MIDI (or right-click to download), in case it's Lesley's embedded MIDIs that crash you.

Peter:

As you obviously know, it isn't as a rule too difficult to find the text and melody for songs like this; if it's "the chords" you're after, though, you probably will have problems.  Most of these songs were not put together with any particular accompaniment (with anyaccompaniment,as often as not) in mind; usually people who want to perform them will make their own arrangements.  You may be able to find them ready-made, but I guarantee you'll learn a lot more by sitting down and sorting them out for yourself.  It's the best way of learning accompanying skills, and that kind of effort is never wasted.  Modern arrangements are probably still in copyright, and may not be available on the Web.

Dear Malcolm, you are of course right, but the interesting thing is that I am unable to find any sheet music for this anywhere. The earlier version does exist, but is not the one I am looking for. On the record, everything sounds like it is in 3 flats!!!!! It is very sophisticated music: end of the century harmonies. It is completely out of print (none in the standard catalogues), and seems to have escaped the earlier piano books ("Erin's Charms, etc.). The university music library where I usually root around is one of the best in the world -- zip! I am sure it is buried away in some trove of shamrockiana, but....At least I found a version of Bantry Bay (at last, though the chording is all wrong). So I am trying!! yours, Peter T.

Hullo again!

Looks like I was trying to teach my granny to suck eggs; sorry about that.  Out of interest, I tried a search at bookfinder.com, and found a number of old editions of Irish Melodies and so on, but they probably have the Stevenson arrangements, which I take it you aren't looking for.  There seem to have been several Lamberts writing or arranging popular songs in the late 19th/ early 20th centuries, among them Gustave, Louis, John Harrison and Sidney, but that was all I managed to find out.   Good luck!

Thought I might try this again, 4 years later, if anyone out there has the sheet music, or can assist. This is the version by Frank Lambert (not "Open The Door") -- now being sung by the Irish Tenors and others, but it seems to be impossible to find the sheet music, except in a very wrong version by James Healy in his Love Songs of the Irish. The verse chords are straightforward, but "the bridge" is impossible to fathom (I have spent many hours listening to John McCormack sing it, trying to get the notes and chords, but it still sounds like crap).

Peter T.

The composer Edward Frank Lambert seems to have published various versions of this. Duke holds one from 1897 Edition #2 in Ab. Edition #1 was in G.

More useful for you the National Library of Australian Digital Music Collection has an online copy of Edition #3 in C, 8 pages. You can access it via: She Is Far From The Land and use the select page drop down at the top of the screen to go from page to page. (and this looks like a site worthy of more investigation!)

There is another version of the Lambert arrangement there too - Edition 2 in Ab: She Is Far From The Land arr.Lambert Edition#2 in Ab, though when I tried it the Page drop down didn't have all the pages, thought the Next arrow key paged through it correctly.

Ab! Oh God. Thank goodness McCormack sings it in C. Though there is the key change (if that is what it is) halfway through. Will work on it. Thanks again. Now if I could only get a decent version of Bantry Bay (will these demands never stop.....)

Peter T.

To say sooth, it is still pretty amazing that I can now have the sheet music in my hand (good thing it is out of copyright) that I have downloaded from the National Library of Australia, and printed out, and here it is. Mudcat/Internet/NLA to me!!

Another version of this entry was finally obtainable after a long delay (a mere 7 years) : this is the score in G.

I notice that the first verse in the sheet music posted above has the words, "and lovers around her are sighing", rather than what I once read were Moore's original words, "and lovers are round her sighing". According to that same source (I'm only relaying this), Moore himself changed the words in order to win a bet, that he would utter an offensive word at a public concert...
