Then there's the Jimmie Rodgers Museum Highland Park, 19th Street and 41th Avenue, Meridian, MS (601)485-1808

I think they have recordings and song books there.

There's a great Dutch site that includes lots of lyrics and chords. It was given to me by a 'catter a few months ago - can't remember who, might have been Wolfgang. The URL is:

Note: If you're looking in the DT/Forum for "the singing brakeman," it may help to spell it correctly. [If not, try it both ways. ;- )

Right now, I'm looking for "The Train [That's] Bringing Jimmie Rodgers Home," which I heard Irish Dement sing last Sunday on Prairie Home Companion. I think it's in the forum somewhere. Still looking through all the "Jimmie Rodgers" threads.

Genie, it's Greg Brown's "The Train Carrying Jimmie Rodgers Home". You can hear Iris Dement singing this song HERE (ARCHIVED PERFORMANCE OF A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION June 15, 2002; click on "31:34").

THE TRAIN CARRYING JIMMIE RODGERS HOME

Come along, my dear, the time is growin' near,
We'll have to walk down where the field is overgrown.
Consumption has claimed his life and we dare not miss the sight,
Of the train carrying Jimmie Rodgers home.

Well, we had some hard times these last few years,
Lost the farm, almost lost our spirits, too.
Yeah, but it's the strangest thing; when we heard that man sing,
Oh, we knew somehow we'd make it through.

I can hear that whistle blow; that old train is rollin' slow,
Sounds like it's cryin' for the singin' brakeman, too.
Back to the sunny south he'll go, and he'll never roam no more,
Here's the train, oh hold me close, oh sweetheart do.

Come here my little fella and let me hold you up.
I want you to remember this day when you're grown.
How your mama and your dad were so proud and so sad,
Watchin' the train carrying Jimmie Rodgers home.

There goes the train carrying Jimmie Rodgers home. Oh-de-loh (yodel)

~Masato

I found the lyrics in the deep recesses of my files, but thanks for posting the link to the thread where they're posted at Mudcat, Masato.

My source has the name "Greg Brown" beside the title. Is he the songwriter?

Yes, Masato! I'm afraid I just scanned ahead to the lyrics and didn't notice your blue clicky -- or the reference to Greg Brown as the author-- in your post. PHC is a veritable treasure house of musical gems [and a lot more].
