ADD: In the Bath (Flanders and Swann)

The good Doctors F & S wrote this marvelous prescription for world peace in the early 60s. Their premise was simple: No one can be out of sorts with him or herself, the world, or anyone in it when relaxing in a wonderful warm bath. Therefore, all the world's leaders should simply plunk themselves down together in a huge communal bath and let the problems of humanity solve themselves or dissipate in a cloud of steam.

I thought it was a great idea then and still do today. Unfortunately, both the album and the precise lyrics have slipped from my grasp over the years. I've looked in the DT, but came up empty.

Anyone have the lyrics - or remember the song - or second the motion, even? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I sent these lyrics a month or so ago to another requestor, privately so as not to take up space, but with a second request I will always print them.

I have the F&S songbook so for all who are interested in words and music feel free to write me.

IN THE BATH

Oh, I find much simple pleasure when I've had a tiring day
In the bath, in the bath!
Where the noise of gentle sponging seems to blend with my top
In the bath, in the bath!
To the skirl of pipes vibrating in the boiler room below,
I sing a potpourri of all the songs I used to know,
And the water thunders in and gurgles down the overflow
In the bath, in the bath!

Then the loathing for my fellows rises steaming from my brain
In the bath, in the bath!
And condenseth to the Milk of Human Kindness once again
In the bath, in the bath!
Oh, the tingling of the scrubbing brush, the flannel's soft caress!
To wield a lordly loofah is a joy I can't express.
How truly it is spoken, one is next to Godliness
In the bath, in the bath!

Then there comes that dreadful moment when the water's running cold
In the bath, in the bath!
When the soap is lost forever and one's feeling tired and old
In the bath, in the bath!
It's time to pull the plug out, time to mop the bathroom floor.
The towel is in the cupboard, and the cupboard is next door!
It's started running hot! Let's have another hour or more
In the bath, in the bath!

I can see the one salvation of the poor old human race
In the bath, in the bath!
Let the nations of the world all meet together face to face
In the bath, in the bath!
One with Kissinger, Kosygin and all those other chaps,
Sadat and Chairman Mao, then we'll have some peace perhaps -
Provided Harold Wilson gets the end without the taps
In the bath, in the bath!

Dear Benjamin,

Many, many thanks for the lyrics! (Having just seen the Summit of the Eight come and go in nearby Denver, I couldn't help but wish they'd had an olympic-sized hot tub for the attendees to meet in for a round or two of parboiled negotiations... Maybe next year at the G-8?)

Just in case you are not aware of it, there has been a 2 or 3 CD reissue of F & S material. I do not have the collection, nor have I seen it at my local music vendors. However I have heard Minnesota Public Radio play some tracks from it, ergo it must exist.

There are 2 multiple disc box sets of Flanders & Swann, comprising all the known extant recordings, including the original recordings of At The Drop of A Hat, and the re-recording variants.
Try your favourite quality record supplier - below a couple of links fyi - best price probably ordering directly from the UK (Amazon.co.uk, or other dealers). Best wishes, Thomas.

On my old LP it ends

There's room for Ike and Khrushchev, and all those other chaps,
Macmillan,-- Viscount Monty! Then we'll have peace, perhaps,
Provided Swann and Flanders get the end without the taps, etc.

Bringing up to the current date would be a delicate job.

Let the leaders of all nations meet together face to face
In the bath, in the bath!
One with Putin, "Ahma-DinnerJacket" 'n' all those other chaps,
Plus President Obama, then we'll have some peaceā€¦ perhaps -
Provided Clegg and Cameron get the end without the taps
In the bath, in the bath!
