Help: Tennor Guitar

A buddy of mine picked up a tennor guitar recently... had someone look at it who said it's fairly rare to find one of these jems in good shape... this thing looks nearly brand new...

So, who knows what about playing a 4 sting guiar??? Tuning, strings ect ect ect??

And is there anyone who might be interested is accuiring this instrument?? The mate of mine is diving back into the bagpipes (JUST what the world needs! *gack*) and he'd love to see it go to someone who's gonna play it as opposed to hanging it on some wall somewhere...

It's from the Harmony Company of Chicago... from the early 60's is the best guess so far... Model number H4102

Hi Clinton,

I've on the search for a Tenor Guitar for awhile. The bad part is I got hammered by the taxman. None of the ready as they say. I would consider trading my tiple for it.

Its not a bag pipe. But then, what is?

Don

Tenor guitar is tuned like the tenor banjo,C-G-D-A. Unfortunatly I can't afford any new toys right now, as much as I would like. Have fun. Marc

I was very sorely tempted by a Martin tenor of early 60's vintage, a couple years back. Last price tag I saw on it was a very reasonable $800 Cdn.

Is it set up to play with a straight neck, reasonable action and like that? How much was he thinking to get for it?

Send me a personal if you want.]

There are three basic tunings for the tenor guitar, maybe four.

1. CGDA like a tenor banjo. @ DGBE like the baritone uke or the top four gtr. stngs. 3. GADE like a drop Irish banjo tuning 4. CGBD like a plectrum banjo (popularized by Eddie Condon).

I had a Harmony tenor that I bought new in about '67 and had stolen in '74. I tuned it like a guitar. I once heard that they were developed late 19th early 20th century and tuned like a tenor banjo so the banjo player in minstrel type troups could play something with a guitar sound without learning new fingerings. In the 60's everybody was plunking guitars and there weren't many tenor banjos around, so the tenor guitars were tuned like guitars so the guitar players could play them. Probably the most famous tenor guitar player was Nick Reynolds of the Kingston Trio. He always had a capo up the neck but I don't know how he tuned it.

Willie-O & all...

When he got it it was in guitar tuning (?) E A D G.. after having it in my hands for about 30 seconds, I dropped it to D A D G.. But I'll take the other tuning suggestions under advisement... Thanks...

Re: It's Setup... Straight neck?? Aren't they all?? Action? Well, it's pretty sweet.. I was walkinga round the house with it all day yesterday and having a great time just wanking around on it... I think it playes really well.. flet really wierd going back to the guitar after playing such a small neck...

I have one made in 1936 by Gibson, TG75, arched top,Sunburst, in original case practically unplayed. I bang away on it every now and again. I just wonder on the price of these really old ones, anyone got any suggestions over price?

Who?? Me???

Would a VIKING do a thing like that?!?!?!

I'm shocked at the very suggestion!!

Ya likely... If he and I can come to an agreement on a price that I can afford... I gotta get more gigs somewhere...
