Can you give us a clue?  There are a lot of hare songs, but that's one I'm not familiar with; did you hear it live, or on a record?  By whom?  Can you quote a few bits of the words to give us a start?

Malcolm

The only info on the song that I can get is that it is a hunting song from Eskdale near Whitby in North Yorkshire. The chorus goes "Beware beware the Eskdale Hare". I hope this is enough information for someone to get the words. Many thanks to those who try. Wullie

Thread Name: songs about vampires?
Subject: Lyr Add: ESKDALE HARE^^

As promised Below Eskdale Hare I'm not sure now of the provenance. Also a Thought Long Lankin sung by Martin Carthy (my HERO).

Eskdale Hare

Now the farmers cried alas and alack,
the Hares are running in one big pack.
the damage they cause was exceeding rare,
for they're all led by a big white Hare.

chorus
Beware beware beware the Eskdale Hare.

Now they got their guns and they went on a hunt.
But they never got a shot at the one in front.
They tried every trick but they Haddn't a prayer,
Bewitched was the Eskdale Hare.

chorus

They tried every trick with gun and snare,
but they never caught that wily Hare.
Twas then the men were filled with fear
for they knew witchcraft was lurking near.

chorus

Now the wise old sage knew what must be done,
with a silver bullet you must load your gun.
Level it when the moon is clear,
Its the only way to slay that Hare.

chorus

Now the gun was primed and levelled that night,
And the bullet crashed out in the pale moonlight,
Then the sight they saw filled the men with Dread,
for where the Hare fell, a witch lay Dead.
^^
I can't help you with the tune I don't know enough about this devils box to do it on the net.

Nice work, Sorcha; I was having no luck at all.  Looks like a modern composition, doesn't it?

I wouldn't have found it in a forum or thread search, because the title is about vampires!! Apparently, the hare of Eskdale is a wolf.......

Think it was written by a bloke called Gus Gomersall. The only version I have is sung by a Yorkshire close harmony group called "Swan Arcade".

Cheers!

Gus Gomersal is still around, You might bump into him in the Endeavour or the Tap & Spile in Whitby. He stays with Wendy Price when he's there.

Great song, just heard it sung at Whitby by Wendy Price's daughters. They did a fab version of it. Gus Gomersal is the author and apparently he's still alive. I'm going to contact him and ask if he minds me exporting it to NZ. ;-) F
