I haven't heard them since Frankie Kennedy died in 1994, but I understand they are still really wonderful. I was lucky, the one and only time i got to see them was in an old wooden church whihc had been converted into a performing arts center in Westerly, Rhode Island. The acoustic and ambiance were just perfect; just the right size for an intimate evening between them and the audience. (Much more so than the time I was lucky enough to see the Chieftains at UMASS-Amherst...huge auditorium, where we perched up high in the cheaper seats, still grand, though.:-) Altan came down and mingled, signed autographs, and sold casette tapes between sets. I was also amazed at the whole place throbbing in time with the music during the fast songs. So many people were stomping their feet that the songs that the whole floor was moving. It was both scary (what's supporting the floor?) and exilerating. |
