Art Thieme Recordings - Now on CD!

29 Apr 00 - 10:18 PM (#220198)
Subject: Art Thieme Recordings
From: Frank McGrath

May God forvive me two things. 1. I haven't visited the Mudcat for a year and 2. I have no Art Thieme CD's or LP's.

Where is the best place to buy them on the web?

Also, Philippa, wherever you are, sorry I didn't get to chat to you in Inishowen. 'Twas a bit mad in a great way I'm sure you'll agree. Hope you are out there and get this message.

Best Regards

Frank McGrath

Frank, try Sandy and Caroline Paton's Folk Legacy store through the Mudcat links. Recently bought 3 of Art's tapes there, and they carry his CD, too--

And Sandy's a pleasure to chat with as well! (Hi, Sandy!)

Thanks JenEllen,
But I tried the shop and there doesn't seem to be any Art Thieme CD's. However I am a bit dizzy and may have missed something so if anyone can point me to the area in the shop where Art's stuff resides I would be very thankful.

The search engines throw up plenty of results but there may be a better source out there.

How about it Art? Can I buy from you directly or can you direct me to comprehensive suppliers?

Hello there mighty Spaw.
As a child I used to hide under the blankets so all the creepy things wouldn't find me. Maybe Max could do something similar with the 'Cat and obliterate all the creepy people from the files. A sort of a 'Cat balnket which nice folk could hide under.

Glad to see you are in fine fettle again.

Keep well and stay posting.

helpful hint to those not yet aquainted with Art Thieme's work. Get hold of his recordings, any of 'em, and listen to a man who loves his songs, understands completely how they should be sung, and does so. Singing to tell the tale.Letting the song do it's work. Just like they usta.

Hello Frank!

What the Hell has gotten into you? First a transatlantic phone call then a reappearance on the Mudcat!

Glad to hear you're going to break down and invest in some of Art's art. He sings a few Irish-American songs that you'll like such as "Jerry, Go and Oil That Car," "Lost Jimmy Whalen" and "The Pokegema Bear." Art is one of the very best things about The Mudcat.

All the best,

Sandy Paton and Folk Legacy is a good place to get everything of mine that's in print. The first 2 LPs for Kicking Mule Records are now owned by Fantasy Records and are gone into the depths of their vaults. I'll be sending a private message to you about those recordings.

Also, my current CD can also be had from Waterbug Records at www.waterbug.com or 1-800-466-0234

Thanks for bein' interested, sir. I do appreciate it. And thanks to all for your too flattering comments.

Art, I just introduced some new folks to your Cowboy's Barbara Allen last night in HearMe, even told them how you came by it and described the Medicine Bow area, but I could never hold a candle to you, wouldn't even try. They all did enjoy it though..new version to several of them.

No matter how many times we listen, Rog and I always are ready for more of Art's work....can turn a bad/sad mood into a big smile with one line and a strum.

Thanks for all you share and for the teaching, Art!

found it a real shame that nowhere there's comprehensive information about the musical work of our LIFETIME Achievement Award winner (AMG - as always - apart from some information has some mis- and some non-information, Folk Legacy and Waterbug understandably promote only their own output)
Therefore I just added my own attempt on an Illustrated Art Thieme discography to my site at http://www.wirz.de/music/thieme.htm
There's certainly a lot to add - so don't hesitate to let me know about all my errors and omissions ;-)

Stefan,

That's amazing you doing all that. It looks great. Maybe I did some o.k. stuff after all. You people are all too much. It's very nice of you to say these things.

The reason I repeated certain songs on recordings made long after the original LPs went out of print is that I wanted to show young folks some of those songs too. I was sure those older things would never see the light of day and I wanted to rub Fantasy Records nose in the stuff because they keep sitting on my old albums done for ED Denson at Kicking Mule. ED is a prince of a guy and a committed advocate for this planet and things green. He became a lawyer to be better able to fight those battles in Northern California. I do hope that the cash he got from selling K.M. has made his good work easier. (The same goes for ED's ex-partner at Kicking Mule, Stefan Grossman.)-----------Sandy and Caroline Paton at Folk Legacy have always kept me stuff available and I thank them heartily for that. Besides being an early mentor for me, Sandy is a great friend. Working with all of them there in Sharon was an exciting event for me every time I had the pleasure of standing in that huge room and singing into their mikes even if cars sometimes went by and screwed up some good takes. **BG**

That cassette the Winfield, Kansas Festival and Bob Redford put out from my shows there was a benefit to help us after one of my my various surgeries and I think that the telling of "The Great Turtle Drive" on that recording is one of the best times I ever told it. That great festival and their National Flat-picking Championship etc. contests are coming closer as we speak. It's toward the end of September---about a month away. I wish I could click my heels together and be in Kansas with you all. Ah, to sit in that trailer when it's 111 degrees in the shade judging 75 contestants!!?? Ah, nostalgia. **another BG**

That record for Charlott's Web in Rockford, Illinois, Get Folked, was put out 30 years ago as of 2003. That's just hard for me to grasp...

That On The River cassette I made in two hours---mostly all first takes I think. I needed something to sell at those steamboat gigs through the '80s and '90s.

There. A few of my remembrances of those doings. It's fun dredging up those times again.

Art, you are a great friend, a wonderful man, and a superb artist. And just like others of your ilk, you never really realize the impact you have had on all of us. And so we give you awards to try and convince you of what we already know.

Stefan, you are a wonderful fellow to do that for Art. And you have done me a great service, as I must now set out to collect this stuff in whatever medium I can find it in. Art is a great inspiration for me as I start to travel down roads that I have always wanted to go down. Labor music, songs of the lumberjacks, songs of the Great Lakes and the Midwest. Most of my travels begin with Art's music as well as others I have met here. You just gave me a wonderful reference point. Thanks again.

it has been my pleasure !!!!

Art - You mention KM 150 as your first KM album (as is written in the liner notes) - why has the later KM 148 come out with an earlier # - is there some story to that ?
and is there any way some owner of KM 148 (which I ain't) can provide a scan of the cover for the discography ?

13 Aug 02 - 11:04 AM (#764415)
Subject: RE: Art Thieme Recordings
From: Art Thieme

Stefan,

No explanation. I never bothered to seek one out. I've always wondered too. I figure that whatever LP had that earlier number was taken out of production before ever having been put into circulation. Then something had to be given that number----and voila---I became KM 148.

The cover showed a photo of me on the very day, after a serious year-long diet, I'd lost 100 pounds. K.M. needed a photo for the back and they went into their archives for one. When the album came out the photo on the back was 100 pounds heavier than the one on the front cover. That makes the album exceptionally heavy and I can't lift it to put it in a scanner. ;-)

x (front cover) plus x plus 100 (back cover) pounds sure are helluva weight - myself I 'only' got roughly 90 (back & front, bottom & top) - was that the reason why I started using a digital camera instead of a scanner to reproduce those album covers ?!?

Proudly announcing that Art's two Folk-Legacy albums are available at last on CD! Sorry it took so long, Art. I had misplaced the DAT master we made of "That's the Ticket" for the cassette company. Found it among other past projects stored in the extra room upstairs -- you know -- the room housing my personal Museum of Early Recording Equipment -- old Magnecords, the old Revox, our early Studer, etc.
So there you have it. "That's the Ticket" and "On the Wilderness Road" are now on CD!

Just don't sell 'em to Rounder. They'd mix me with a David Amram workshop and Yma Sumac (World Music, don't'cha know) and make me sound like an Almeda Riddle--Buffy St. Marie duet. ;-)

Kidding aside, it is grand to have 'em available for both of the folks that have been looking for 'em.

Just a note to those interested:

I'll be hanging out at the FOX VALLEY FOLK AND STORYTELLING FESTIVAL over Labor Day. That's in Geneva, Illinois (USA) on a beautiful island in the middle of the Fox River---right in Downtown Geneva. I just might even do a song or whatever if they'll let me. I've not sung anything anywhere since 1997 but open-G tuning on the banjo is something I can almost do a song on once in a while. We'll see. It would be great to see some Mudcatters out there !!!

SRS,

I'm glad they got there O.K. But here's a warning of sorts: Listen straight through as the different tracks do NOT mean you're going to the next song. All seems to play well enough to hear the material, but I've yet to figure how to not have 20 or more tracks to a given song. Such is life. Working with these new tech things makes me feel like I'm the sorcerer's apprentice.

Hope you can hear 'em alright!?
