Played it last night.I have to say it is one of the best albums I have bought in a long time. Liza Carthy's version of the raggle taggle gypsies is worth the 13 quid. Anyway, I reminded while listening to it that some one had suggested a thread where people could review or reccommend their favourite albums. I do wish we could get a thread like that going. I would suggest anyone who loves folk would love this album. |

Just a couple of instruments or do they add a band, horn section , strings ect? I'm in the mood for stripped down arrangements lately. Right now I'm not in the mood for a synth with my folk music. There is button accordian on this album which was not on the previous one. I thought I might not like it but it really adds a lot. The singing is stellar, as usual. This is a very "traditional folk album...However, I have to admit I don't think it is as good as the first one...but I have not listened to this one as much having only got it yesterday. If you don"t have the first one..get it..fabulous record. Let us know what you think of it if you get it. |

As James pointed out it is worth the money for Raggle-Taggle Gipsy's alone. The following is a review from AMG all-music guide on the web. AMG EXPERT REVIEW: Anybody familiar with traditional English folk music knows Waterson: Carthy is a true treasure of the genre, and on Broken Ground, they do very little to disparage that fact. In fact, if anything, they have continued to expand on their sound with the contributions of Saul Rose on melodeon, who truly goes some distance in filling out the sound that has been largely comprised of only an acoustic guitar and a fiddle. Once again, the arrangements here are exceptional, with Eliza Carthy emerging as an even more accomplished vocalist and violinist. From the gentle flow of "Raggle Taggle Gypsies" to the poignant "The Ditchling Carol," strong harmonies, memorable melodies, and hypnotic instrumentals make this collection engaging from start to finish. "The Bald Headed End of the Broom," which features the Phoenix New Orleans Parade Band, is a fine example of Waterson: Carthy's distinct ability to make music that is both studied and infectious. -- Matt Fink |

And for my money....one of the Best Frankie Armstrong..the album is called The Grass Grew Oer. Her version of Little Duke Arthurs Nurse is grand indeed. |
