08 May 00 - 12:05 PM (#224657) Subject: The Army and the Navy Never Shall Agree From: GUEST,John S Hi. I'm looking for the lyrics to a song I heard on Mary Cliff's "Traditions" some years ago. It has the words "the army and the navy never shall agree". Does anyone know the title and the composer? Is there a recording available? |

11 May 00 - 01:07 PM (#226501) Subject: RE: The Army and the Navy Never Shall Agree From: GUEST,John S Dear Wolfgang; Thanks Wolfgang! Yes "For the sake of example" and "Don't you go" seem to be the same song. I listened to it on Amazon.com - Doesn't seem to be on any of the John Martyn albums, who is the composer. Why this song has two titles isn't clear to me yet. I got the lyrics from the New Saint George website. Thanks for steering me the right direction. Regards, John S |
12 May 00 - 05:32 AM (#226969) Subject: RE: The Army and the Navy Never Shall Agree From: GUEST,Wolfgang John, I'm not so sure now, after rehearing, that I'm right. Problem is that I have only a tape of the House Band record and I don't trust completely the handwritten titles respectively don't know exactly which tracks belong to which titles. They have the 'Don't you go' song from above exactly on their record but not with this title (thanks for asking, by the way, I had looked for these lyrics as well, but with another title) then comes an interlude and then a different song (within the same track) about a deserter being shot which starts 'At the age of fourteen' and has the words 'for the sake of example, just as an example' in it. I guess this is the song titled 'For the sake of example'. Wolfgang |

Don't you go Don't you go my son Don't you go Don't you go my son. The proud and the powerful In whose hands we lie Never will be pleasured Til all our women cry. Don't you go Don't you go Ah, don't you go Don't you go my son. The mastery, the misery Called the art of war Must never try and form a peace As it has done before. Don't you go Don't you go my son Don't you go Don't you go my son. The army and the navy They never will agree 'Til all the men and all the boys Are gone from this country.
