Support from HearMe for Macs

From: Alice

Last week I wrote to HearMe about Mac support, and I thought some of you may be interested in the response. I don't have a G3, but maybe if all who are concerned wrote to the website and let them know there is interest for Mac support, it may speed things along.

When will Hearme be available for the Macintosh platform? I have friends around the world who have asked me to join them in a singing group on hearme. I have two Macs, and I won't be getting Windows at any time.

Hello,

We have put the Mac platform as a future goal but, unfortunately, at this time Mplayer.com does not support the Macintosh format. We realize that we are missing out on a lot of potential members, and we apologize for the frustration. Please keep an eye on our progress at: http://mplayer.com/members.phtml

Okay... there is a way. If you have a G3 or better, and have a PC emulator program, you can run our software. The results have been mixed, but it has worked for others.

Thank you for supporting Hearme.com.

Sincerely,

Hearme.com Customer Support

Dang I wish they'd hurry it up! Important folks with Macs want to join the fun too...

---------Comments---------- Hi, I have Hearme voice creator on my web space and it is used by members of Mudcat for a song circle. I (and i think I can say we) are delighted with the program and what it has made possible for us - we have people from UK, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina all joining in sharing songs.

The only problem I have is that there are Mac users keen to join in. I know you are working on something but have you any idea of when a Mac version will become available?

Yes or, Amos, you seem like a man with both technical knowledge and good writing skills. Do you fancy having a go and seeing if you can provoke a better response than the standard letter that Alice and I recieved?

Thanks for the kind remark, Jon. I will give it a shot from home this evening and post whatever I come up with here for your titillation.

I emailed my letter to info@hearme.com. I noticed that there were several addresses listed here.

BTW, I told them that we miss hearing some of our best singers and songwriters...but they're artsy types that use macs...he...he

Amos, let us see your letter when you get it "crafted."

Mary

Well, at least they added the bit about the G3 in the response they sent to me.

True Alice but jugdging by the responses you and I got, I get the feeling that it is a question that they are often asked and just give out standard answers to. Did you manage to find any real information at the address they gave because I couldn't?

Perhaps I am being unfair but I am a little bit puzzled by a company who have been promising a solution for months, has an unsatisfactory stock answer ready and can't even comment on any time schedules (many companies have planned release dates) or alternatively suggest the possible availability of alpha/ beta software.

Help! I have a G3. But I am not sure if I have a PC emulator programme, what is it and has anyone had any success on the Big Macs with Hearme?

Rather intimidated by any tech stuff when my daughter isn't here to correct my stupid mistakes for me.

Metchosin:

What you want is a program called Virtual PC. Another one, less satisfactory I believe, is called SoftWindows. Get someone to install it for you. It runs the whole Windows architecture via an emulation on your Mac. Then you can download the Hearme file (probably a Zip file or a .exe file) and install it. Someone on the Cat can teach you how to run it and you'll be home free. If you can stand the windowsness of it! :>)

Thanks Amos. Finding someone to install it for me might be a bit of a feat right now. Is it something I can download from the Net myself, like the Realplayer, or would it require a bit more savy than I possess, to do it?

I love my Tupperware, and I don't want it to feel like a second class citizen, but I do want to hear everbody.:-(

My daughter talked us into a Mac, so she could do her film editing and other related stuff on it, that is way beyond me. I still am not sure what a Jazz Drive does even. But for the most part, it seems pretty user friendly, even for a novice like me and I hate having to defend my love for my it.

I've just tried installing HearMe on my Mac through Virtual PC 2.2. It seems to have installed OK, so I'll let you know how it goes...

Subject: RE: Support from HearMe for Macs

...in answer to the above, it' hasn't gone too well. TCP/IP settings are fiddly buggers with a PC. Beats me how anyone can like the darned things.
I'll have to try it one one of the Macs at home with a dial-up connection (Jeez, this is going to start costing me if it works!). Will let you know...

Gervase, check my driveway.com thread. It's not HearMe, but at least a way to share music with Macs.

...to refresh - tried using the dial-up connection, but the emulation program is just too bloody slow.
Next step is the latest version of Virtual PC and a 500Mghz all-singing, all-dancing G4 in the office over a dial-up.
I'll wait until everyone else has gone, though, or they'll realise that I AM completely barking when they see me crooning at the Mac! >br> :^)
