Have you Shaved Your Neck Today?

I'm waiting with baited breath for "Woody", my 1949 Martin 0-18 to come back from Bruce Dowd's guitar hospital. I'm having the clubby neck shaved down to about a Gibson J-45 profile. A bit scary, but Bruce assures me that he's done this thousands of times over the years (I think he's exagerating)*

Just curious what other cats have had this particulae surgery on their instruments and what your feelings were after.

Rick

* how DO you spell it?

I had the neck shaved on my D-42. Workmanship was first class. Improved the playability and enjoyment of it 10 fold.

I usually spell 'it' with one letter "i" and one letter "t", in that order! How do YOU spell it?

Rick has an out-patient clinic where periodically my banjo undergoes minor surgery.
I sit close by while Rick works on your instrument. I've had some memorable chats with the surgeon during those times.

I've had my ankle bones reshaped, turned out OK, but I guess that was less critical!

Is the 0-18 a slotted head? V neck? Small body? Similar to the 000s?

Jed....Sorry, I forgot to say, there's a pretty fair picture of "Woodrow" on Rick's picture page at bbc's. O is smallest of the O's.....sounds like we're talking to the gynecologist again.

I spell "it" the same as Banjer, but for "exaggerating" I use, in contrast to JenEllen, three "g" - two after the first a, one at the end ;-)
By the way, I shaved my neck yesterday, when I was cutting my hair ;-)

Catspaw I must admit your mind never ceases to amaze me.
I think Rick would make a great gynecologist. He has good technical skills and he has a gift of understanding women quite well.
Just think of all the money you would make Rick.

I always wanted to be an amateur gynecologist, but I was never very good with the ladies.

Don't shave if I can avoid it, my neck or any other thing.

Rick,I bet you will fall in love with that guitar all over again, kinda like a fling with your high school sweetheart, or something. Maybe the something. Anyway, I'm sure you will not be disappointed. Enjoy!

Peace, Mooh.

Open letter to Banjer: I was WAITING for that one! You win the first prize of a date with Catspaw. Tenth prize is of course, ten dates.

Puhleeze people. I would make a very bad gynacologist, because of my tendency to throw myself into my work....also as you well know, I'm self-employed...safer that way.

Anybody else ACTUALLY have experience with cutting down their instrument necks?

Dr. Rick, I took at least 1/4 inch off an old Harmony archtop neck, reshaped the heel and the headstock without any ill effects. There is no trussrod either. I used it thus for a year or so, but it's currently hanging in my shop awaiting a new bridge. I don't expect it to be a problem when I get around to restringing it. Once reshaped a P-bass neck to more closely resemble a Jazz bass neck (pulled the frets to make it fretless too), no trouble. If you've got a trussrod you'll be fine, and likely fine even without. I'm reminded of an old song: "Oh, she asked about his trussrod/While her neck was being shaved,/Fret not,he said,I've come a bit unstrung..." Oh, no, I'm not reminded of any such thing, I suppose. Where's Walt Kelly when you need him?

Give it up Rick.........ITs hard(?) to get a serious reaction. But I do have a question......See, I didn't realize Woody was Jewish until Wesley brought it up...Could you elaborate on this? Another slice of knowledge, a few tips.....or would you prefer to nip it right now?

Would one of you Jewish types tell me the meaning of "schtup" ??? I'm serious.

Subject: RE: Have you Shaved Your Neck Today?
From: Little Neophyte

Well Kendall, it is a Yiddish word that has to do with intercourse but I think it is used to describe things like.......
Being schutp in a business deal
I don't think you would use it in, "I love you darling so much I wait to schutp you"
It is mostly use as an insult.
Well at least that is how I understood it.

SCHTUP?
I believe that is a well known, widely used Southern term. It is meant to stifle the other half of most any argument. It is pronounced as a two syllable word, Scht - up.

ie:(an attempt to keep this music related)
1st guy:You play notes on that there gittar with the Columbus method....first ya find the note and then ya land on it!!!
2nd guy:SCHT-UP!! You cain't do no better!

Um, if you have your guitar neck shaved, then regret it, it'll just grow back, right?

And Bonnie, about the minor surgery thing... I vividly remember when my insane fiddle teacher was on a one-day crusade against the little wooden squares that many fiddles have glued onto the inner back seam to reinforce the seam - and decided that mine needed to come out. He slid a chisel into my fiddle's f-hole, holding it where the little square met the back, and he wanted me to whack on the chisel with a piece of a two-by-four.

Just say no, Marion

Beautifully Joe. I wanted a thinner profile neck (same thing that merle travis wanted back in about 1952) 'cause i use my thumb a lot on the sixth and fifth strings when playing solo instrumentals.
