Just wondering if any of you have tried head-set mics. I would like to use one for whistle / flute/ singing.. so I can move about.

Have any of you tried them? Are they any good? do you have to spend BIG money to get a good one? Is there a big difference between the various brands?

alison...I've seen Loretto Reid use them with whistles and flute and she always sounds good. 'Don't know what make or what outboard gear she prefers though. Have considered getting one myself because I'm not too good at aiming my mouth at a mic consistently. My guess is that since mics generally improve with the cost, so too will the headset variety. Good luck, and let us know what you do! Mooh.

We have been using AKG C420 Micro Mic for the whistle and it's been working more than adequately well. So I guess it should fit nicely for the flute also - with the odoe it's not good, it only picks up the reed. I know it is quite widely being used for vocals also, especially 'wirelessly'.

Its sound is typically condenser-mic-like so some people would reject it for that, but again that's a matter of taste.

The price of it here in Finland is some 200 euros, including headset and power adapter (phantom or battery), but I guess you can get it cheaper practically anywhere else.

I suggest that you'd test - if only possible - more than one brand, not only for the sound but also for the comfortable 'sitting' of the headset.

Christine Lavin has written a good article about the process of choosing and using a headset microphone/wireless setup. here is the link.
