Thought for the Day - May 18,00

From an article on "Flags of our Fathers" the new top non-fiction bestseller about the 6 men who raised the American flag at Iwo Jima:

Flags of Our Fathers was rejected by 27 publishers.
Irving Stone's Lust for Life was rejected by 17 publishers.
Thor Heyerdahl's Kon Tiki was rejected by 20 publishers.
The first Dr. Seuss book was rejected by 23 publishers.
Watership Down was rejected by 43 publishers.

Rejection, anyone?

Just goes to show that "If at first you don't succeed" -

but then again, you would expect the author of a book about Iwo Jima to have perseverance, yes?

I'd be interested in a list of total crap that was ACCEPTED on the first try.

Yes you would have thought so Mairo

though I am glad Watership Down took ages to get published, as I would have been younger than I was when I first saw it. Any younger and I would have been REALLY upset.

Awwwww poor bunnies.

It was bad enough at that age

Since that list would involve every bad sequel to an original that sold big, it would be about the length of the entire DT, unzipped - or bigger.

Peter.

That's a good point 'chuck......and too, it would depend on one's definition of "crap."

I left out "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" that was rejected by 17 publishers. Then some fool 18th publisher went ahead....(scurries for cover)....

hmmm, well "The Celestine Prophecy" springs to mind: a piece of crap that was not accepted by ANY publisher and was self-p[ublished by the author..it went on to become a big ole New Age (rhymes with sewage) best-seller and I am pretty sure the author (and I use the term loosely, goddess, is this book badly written, I was assigned to review it and could not get past the first twenty pages) is now a millionaire...

If you thought the book was bad - try listening to Neil Diamonds record of JLSeagull. I never liked seagulls anyway.

Spaw - Check out the Sunday New York Times Best Seller List for a start. The Rock and Cactus Jack are right up there at the top.

Watership Down made me want to go out and shoot bunnies. Must have been a bad time in my life.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull, the movie, was great with the sound turned off. First of the "flying" movies.

But on your original thought: "Just what makes that silly old ram
Think he'll butt a hole in that dam
Everyone knows a ram can't
Put a hole in a dam
But he has HIGH HOPES..."

Serve me right if a seagull craps on me.

'Spaw - seagull crap just means they can't tell you from the landscape...when they get made at you, they projectile vomit...MUCH more disgusting.
