05 Nov 02 - 05:58 AM (#818873) Subject: Lyr Add: JUG OF PUNCH 3 From: Nigel Parsons another variation, cribbed from the Bangor Scout & Guide club song book JUG OF PUNCH (3) (anon) As I was sittin' with lug and spoon, On one fine morn in the month of June, A birdie sang on an ivy bunch, And the song he sang was a jug of punch. Chorus: Tu-ra-lu-ralu, (3 times) (repeat last two lines of verse). What more diversion can a man desire, Than to court his girl by an open fire, A cherry pippin to crack and crunch. Aye and on the table a jug of punch. Even the doctors with all their art, Cannot cure depression of the heart, Even the cripple forgets his hunch, When he's safe outside a jug of punch. The immortal Gods drink their nectar fine, And the quality folk drink their claret wine, I'd give them every grape in the bunch, Just for a sip from a jug of punch. And when I'm dead .and in my grave, No costly tombstone shall I crave, Just lay me down in my native peat, With a jug of punch at my head and feet. notes: collected from The Bangor Song Book (Bangor Scout & Guide club University College of North Wales) published Mch 1970 NP |

07 Nov 02 - 08:10 PM (#821187) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jug of Punch From: GUEST,Q One definition- a lug is a container for fruit, etc., about 17 inches long, 13 wide, and 7-8 deep. But I remember the much smaller container, oblong basket-shaped conainer with a handle, in which we used to buy grapes. It was about 15 inches long by 7 wide and 5 deep (narrowing toward the base). I still have a couple. We incorrectly called these lugs. They were used sometimes as a lunch box. More likely, however, the scout leader censored jug and made the boys substitute lug. |

05 Jul 18 - 12:15 PM (#3935479) Subject: RE: Tune/Origins: Jug of Punch From: leeneia I was curious about the tune called Jug of PUnch, so I searched at ABCnotation.com They have 4 pages of tunes in 2/4, 4/4, 3/4 and even one in 9/8. Many of them are much the same, maybe identical. It would take too much time to figure all that out. But I like the looks of some of them and will work on them further. Clearly when somebody asks about Jug of Punch, it's difficult to know exactly what they mean. |
05 Jul 18 - 02:17 PM (#3935509) Subject: RE: Tune/Origins: Jug of Punch From: GUEST,Peter Laban I don't think the question about the tune is all that relevant at this time, as the question was asked eighteen years ago. One would assume the OP has found it by now or lost interest. Current activity is centered on the words of Joe Heaney's version(s), which at this point have been located and posted. |

There is precedent for this sort of thing - there is also a reel called "The Wind that Shakes the Barley", which has nothing to do with the song of the same name, and a reel called "The Sally Gardens" which has nothing to do with the song/poem "Down by the Sally Gardens". 06 Jul 18 - 11:32 AM (#3935739) Subject: RE: Tune/Origins: Jug of Punch From: leeneia Peter, I have the right to be interested in the tunes, even if other people are talking about lyrics at present. I made MIDI files of a reel and two waltzes and decided that they didn't appeal to me enough to do further work on, such as chords or accompaniment. |
06 Jul 18 - 03:07 PM (#3935797) Subject: RE: Tune/Origins: Jug of Punch From: GUEST,Peter Laban You have all right to be interested in whatever takes your fancy, in the context of this thread, your response, to the OP, I assumed, sounded a bit well, late. There's an absolutely wonderful recording of Tommy Peoples playing a version of the reel the Jug of Punch on the CD 'Maiden Voyage' (if I remember correctly). It's a bit of trivia, and not at all relevant to this thread. The tune has nothing to do with the song that is the subject of this. And there's no reason whatsoever to include it in this thread. So there you have it. |
