Searching for 'little' John Cameron!

Back a lot of years ago I worked with the Band "The Sons Of Erin". One of the players was "Little" John Cameron, a Scots lad with a big booming voice. We re-connected after many years and had some good chats on the phone, but right after my last talk with him, I LOST my phone book! I tried to hunt down his number, but had no luck at all. I'm virtually certain he lives in (or near) St. John's Newfoundland. He's called a few times since and got my answering machine...but I still don't have the number. I know he checks out Mudcat occasionally so....John, if you see this, e-mail me at rfield@interlog.com, or call and leave your number. Got a whole lot of stuff to tell you.

Rick

Rick, sorry I can't help you, but I have an old cassette which I dubbed from an LP back in the late 60s or early 70s. It is self-titled 'Sons of Erin'. I have no other informantion, not even a track listing. Skipping through, the first 4 songs were 'Liverpool Lou', McCarthy's Party, Mingulay Boat Song' and 'Sam Hall'. Is that the group you are referring to? If so, were you on that record? I used to play it a lot back then. It was my first introduction to quite a few great songs.

Cheers, Stewie.

Hi Stewie.

No. I never recorded with the band. To the best of my knowledge, two of the Irish members had left when little John and I joined. I was strictly a fill in til they found and actual Irishman. After all, the band was billed as being "direct from Dublin Ireland"....and I STILL haven't seen Dublin! Had some fun times though. They re-formed a little later and did several well-received albums. Most of them now live in Newfoundland, and I believe that Ralph O'Brien, the leader owns a pub in St. John's.

Well Catters, if Little John stays around for a while we're probably in for a treat. Of course most of us will need a translator but you can understand why he'd never been mistaken for a "true Son of Erin"!

Actually John you can probably confirm a little story I was tellin' folks about some mobsters developing a liking for that "good ol Irish music" when we played the VD room in Montreal. Do ya remember when an irate lady went into the dressing room and broke MY guitar instead of the one she was after?

Ah, the VD Room...

I think I was 18 when they lowered the drinking age to 18 from 21. But I must have been 15 or 16 when I started going to hear folk music at the VD Room and was never asked for proof of age.

BTW, I still have a scratched up LP by Little John Cameron called "Sit Down Mr. music Man."

Actually Mike, Little John's a bit "scratched up" himself these days, but so are we all!

Just so folks don't think we were all taking huge chances with sexually transmitted diseases (which we were anyway), the "VD" room was the Venus di Milo Lounge on St. Catherine st. in Montreal. A "Folk Bar" if ever there was one.
