Lyr Req: Lucky, Lucky, Lucky Me (Berle, Arnold)

Subject: Title of song (Ital., Eng.) containing lyric:

partial lyric: "Lucky, lucky, lucky me..."

Subject: RE: Name of song (Ital., Eng.) containing lyric:

Chorus from memory:

Lucky, lucky, lucky me I'm a lucky son of a gun I work eight hours, I sleep eight hours, That leaves eight hours for fun!

Sorry, that's all I can recall ...

Addendum to chorus:

Lucky, lucky, lucky me, even though I haven't a dime,

I laugh and play in a carefree way and I have a heck of a time.

The furrows are overgrown, but I seem to remember Julius

La Rosa( old Arthur Godfrey show) doing this song in the 40's.

It's all I remember, also !!

This is a song from Naples and in Italian it's called "La Tarantella". Thanks to RS and Les Blank for their help with some of the lyrics in English. Perhaps someone else may be able to help with the rest of the lyrics in English and/or Italian.

Maybe I need to locate an old Julius La Rosa recording and listen to it!

Well I don't know if this will be of any help in tracking the song down, but I just heard the music to "Lucky Lucky Lucky Me" played as the background to a television ad for The Olive Garden Restaurant chain.

Shades of sellout!

[You presumably all know about the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" being sold to Microsoft ... do the non-Canadians out there know about Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changing" being sold for advertising use by the Bank of Montreal?]

I still haven't located all the words to the song in either English or Italian (La Tarantella - The Tarantula). Nor have I found a recording of the song. Was the Olive Garden's version a vocal or an instrumental one?

The sale of these tunes you mentioned probably means big money for their composers and I presume that money makes their world go 'round. The more you have, the more you want and the ethics of the sale are not even questioned.

Unfortunately, the Olive Garden TV ad was only instrumental, no words. And I haven't found an Olive Garden site on the web (I had thought of asking their Advertising Agent if they had a particular source for the music).

Haven't had time to search in detail, but here are a couple of promising-looking sites obtained with a Dogpile Search for Italian + Music:

"The Italian Music Homepage" - a list of links - at http://www.cilea.it/music/entrance.htm

"Italian music composers & composition: Various information on the Web" - another list of links at http://www.cilea.it/music/muscompo.htm#libretti

Let me know if you find it, I'd like the lyrics too!

BTW, "curiously enough", the Bank of Montreal's version of The Times They are A-Changing (which did include lyrics) left out key lines like - "The battle outside is raging" ... "We'll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls" ... and "Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command" ... (leaving a much manicured song that fitted better with their corporate image...)

My transcription from the recording at The Internet Archive:

LUCKY, LUCKY, LUCKY ME
Milton Berle, Buddy Arnold, ©1950
As recorded by Evelyn Knight with the Ray Charles Singers, 1950.

Lucky, lucky, lucky me! I'm a lucky son of a gun.
I work eight hours and sleep eight hours. That leaves eight hours for fun.

Lucky, lucky, lucky me! Even though I haven't a dime,
I laugh and play in a carefree way and I have a wonderful time.

I smile at the sun and when daylight is done
Ev'ry evening is loaded with charms.
I wish on the moon, and I whistle a tune
And I dream of a boy in my arms.

Lucky, lucky, lucky me! You can kiss your worries goodbye.
Through life just chuckle and Lady Luck'll make you as lucky as I.

[Also recorded by Annette Funicello, on "Annette: A Musical Reunion with America's Girl Next Door," Disney CD 60010, 1993. It was also recorded as a 78 by Milton Berle, on RCA 20-3948, but apparently, that recording hasn't been reissued.]

There are actually many pieces of Music called "Tarantella" or "La Tarantella" as there would be Valse or Gigue (Jig), as it was a dance. Some of the melodies were popularized with the addition of lyrics, and are still around. There are several Italian songs with that title. You might try going to amazon.com & do a search on tarantella & see if you can listen to portions of tracks to find the tune you're looking for.

Hi thankyou so much for this thread! My Dad loves this song, but he never had the complete lyrics. He says his Dad used to sing it too. His 80th birthday recently happened and he was not very happy with all the health problems he is accumulating, but did he get a boost when we came up with this song and performed it for him! Next is his 50th wedding anniversary and I will get the CD for him. Considering just the lyrics made him 10 years younger, he will be joining a marathon next.

I remember this pop song from the days when Italian songs were copied wholesale into English (usually with completely new lyrics). My Calabrian grandparents sang a song to the same tune which began:

Calabrese prima (do si?), prima (do si?), prima (va lu?).

Any idea what the Calabrese version's title and lyrics were? I think the word Tarentella came in the next phrase.

From: Jim Dixon

I found a recording on YouTube, which is posted along with the following lyrics. I can't vouch for their accuracy or provenance, but it's the same tune as LUCKY, LUCKY, LUCKY ME.

TARANTELLA NAPOLETANA

Jammo bello, jammo bello
abballammo sta tarantella
cu' na coppia e ancora n'ata
e facimmece sta ballata.

Che priezza, che alleria,
quanta zumpe Nennella mia,
abballammo ticchete e tacchete
c''o tammurriello e c''o triccabballacco.

Onn'Antonio mo' se scanza
ca' le pesa nu poco 'a panza,
dice ca 'o ballo è p''e gugliune
e isso se magna sti maccarune.

Rosa fermateve pecchè se sape
che a vuje ve gira nu poco 'a capa,
e si abballate sta tarantella
ve gira pure la cirivella.

On Vicienzo stateve quieto,
vulite i' annanze e invece jate areto,
avite vippeto nu poco 'e vino
e state facenno sta diece 'e ammuina.

Onn'Amalia, sissantanne,
pare ca tene sulo vintanne,
balla e zompa, zompa e abballa.
Ah, m'ha scamazzate nu callo!

Jammo bello giuvinotto
ca' facimmo l'una 'e notte,
jammo bello figliulella
abballamo sta tarantella.

Tammuriello e tammurrelle
scetavajasse e putipù
dint'a chesta tarantella
tenite na giuventù....

If you can find a copy of the LP (maybe out on CD): Connie Francis "Love Italian Style", MGM Records, E/SE-4448, Tarantella (Lucky, Lucky, Lucky Me), M. Berle & B. Arnold, Anne-Rachel Music Corp. ASCAP. I have the record, but, no, I won't sell - very scratchy anyway. Buona fortuna!

'Nora Bayes, who died in 1928, was billed as "The Greatest Single Woman Singing Comedienne in the World." This included novelty tunes such as "My Barney Lies Over the Ocean" and "I Work Eight Hours, I Sleep Eight Hours, That Leaves Eight Hours for Love."'

Found this out there on the www.

I don't know if the songs are related. Perhaps someone could give it a listen and see?

This is a delightful song, but except for the "hook," it has no resemblance to LUCKY, LUCKY, LUCKY ME.

The lyrics below are my transcription from the recording at the Internet Archive. (Note one gap.) The bibliographic information is from the National Library of Australia, but they do not have the sheet music viewable online.

I WORK EIGHT HOURS, SLEEP EIGHT HOURS, THAT LEAVES EIGHT HOURS FOR LOVE
Words by Edgar Leslie and Bert Kalmar; music by Ted Snyder.
Sydney: D. Davis & Co., 1910.
As sung by Nora Bayes, 1914.

1. Danny Maloney, who worked in a store,
Waited on pretty young girls by the score.
He tried to date up each one that he met,
For Dan was a real ladies' man.
One girlie asked him when he came to call,
"Why is it you're never tired at all?"
And as he hung up his hat in the hall,
Danny said: "I'll tell you why.

CHORUS: "I work eight hours. I sleep eight hours.
That leaves eight hours for love,
Eight long hours with nothing to do.
Think of the fun if I spent them with you.
To prove I love ya, I'll kiss and hug ya,
And if you want an encore,
My sleep I'll be shirking. I'll even quit working
So I can love you some more."

2. Dan had to serve on the jury one day.
Up on the witness stand young Mrs. Grey
Told how her husband from home stayed away.
She said, "I want to be free."
After the case had been thoroughly tried,
"What is your verdict?" the magistrate cried.
Dan looked her over and then he replied:
"You need a husband like me. CHORUS

It is also available on i-Tunes - just search on Evelyn Knight it's there on an album called Beautiful Brown Eyes and you can buy just the one track for 79p. I heard this played at the Young Vic Theatre this weekend whilst waiting for "The Cat In the Hat" to start - all the children were clapping along - it was great!

Jim- the missing lyric is : "One girlie asked him, when he came to call...". I found it in a book years ago, and it's absolutely one of my favorite pieces to perform. I'll have it up on Youtube someday!

Lucky, lucky, lucky me!
I'm a lucky son of a gun.
I work eight hours, and sleep eight hours.
That leaves eight hours for fun.

Lucky, lucky, lucky me!
Even though I haven't a dime,
I laugh and play in a carefree way
And I have a wonderful time.

I smile at the sun and when daylight is done
Ev'ry evening is loaded with charms.
I wish on the moon, and I whistle a tune
And I dream of a girl in my arms.

Lucky, lucky, lucky me!
You can kiss your worries goodbye.
Life's a chuckle and Lady Luck'll
Make you as lucky as I

Lucky, lucky, lucky me!
I'm a lucky son of a gun.
I work eight hours, and sleep eight hours.
That leaves eight hours for fun.

Lucky, lucky, lucky me!
Even though I haven't a dime,
I laugh and play in a carefree way
And I have a heck of a time.

I smile at the sun and when daylight is done
Ev'ry evening is loaded with charms.
I wish on the moon, and I whistle a tune
And I wink at the girl in my arms.

Lucky, lucky, lucky me!
You can kiss your worries goodbye.
Life's a chuckle and Lady Luck'll
Make you as lucky as I
