Now I've ordered her anthology CD and it's become my favorite CD. I am playing the grooves out of it and want to learn every song on it. AND, they're all in my keys!!! Whooo! I've ordered the Kate Wolf songbook, which ought to arrive tomorrow, and can't wait to see which ones are included there. I can especially recommend this one to those of you who liked the two "Heart of a Woman" CDs from Ireland (and if you haven't bought those, run, don't walk, to your local CD outlet and snag 'em both, as well as the Mary Black solo CD. They are not only beautiful and melodic but they seem so personal. You are going to love the Songbooks. Mine are dogeared. There is a great compilation put together by Nina Gerber, out two years ago approximately called Remembering Kate Wolf...well worth acquiring. She was also a very generous person. Utah Phillips told the story of Kate visiting his home and after having a drafty bathroom floor experience, returning home, she sent him two hundred dollars to have the floor fixed. I recommend the compilation album that Eric Bogle is on....my favorite is the one Lucinda Williams sings (I think the title is "Here in California"), although all of the cuts are good....I'm going to have to check out the website and get more informed! I've made it my special mission for a number of years to introduce her songs at musical gatherings to people who are not yet familiar with her work. In the words of Utah Phillips, Kate was "a healer who, by remembrance, will continue to heal, to care for us". This to me sums up the essence of her music. I remember the reaction of a man at a bluegrass gathering, when I tried to introduce her song "I Never Knew My Father" to the group; the song itself did not go over too well with the chord changes being a little hard to follow. But the man sitting next to me was profoundly impacted by the song. He revealed to me that his father had died before his birth and that he had unsuccessfully tried to write a song about this...he said that Kate had spoken for him better than he had ever been able to. "Songs need new voices to sing them in places they have never been sung in order to stay alive" (Emmylou Harris). So keep on singing Kate's songs, and she will always be with us. Anyone going to the Kate Wolf Festival in Sebastopol, CA. later this month?

I'd say that half of her stuff is self absorbed naval gazery and the other half is near on brilliant. I have the anthology and I do listen to it all when I play it. But I just about have to slkip that Lilac Bush and Appletree thing. Riding out the storm Trumpet Vine Great Divide are favorites of mine. Lilac/Appletree Dolphin definately aren't. She's playing with Nina Gerber and, I think, Bela fleck. Her mellow serenity spreads out from her voice like ripples in a still pond. |

'See Here' and 'Slender' from her best album Poet's Heart, 'Calgary', etc. etc. And don't forget: 'You' from her relatively underrated first album 'Breezes'. She did some great covers too: Paul Siebel's 'Then Came The Children', Gil Turner's 'Carry It On'. She did a great job adding music to Woody Guthrie's 'One By One'. Far far better than the poor, recent, Billy Bragg & Wilco-version. |

I always look forward to the festival--such a warm and loving group of friends. I like Kate's song about the bulletin board on the country store.. "Everybody's Lookin' for the Same Thing" I put together a cross word puzzle using her songs...and gave it to you at the festival last year...that was fun to create. Do you still have it? The memorial festival is growing every year, and is mostly positive, Cloud Moss does a great job of organizing the event. I loved it, except that some one stolea folding camp stool of mine there this year.
