Check out the site www.mp3.com and search under "Bonaparte crossing the Alps." Mike

It's more commonly known as Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine; a search at  J C's Tunefinder will get you staff notation, etc., in several keys and variants.

Doncha' just love it? I opened this thinking, "No its, 'Napoleon Crosses the Rhine,'" and within 3 posts it had already gone through 2 other names. I think we may have most of the variants now, unless we simplify it to "French Guy Crosses Something."

No help on the 'puter stuff, but a good hammered dulcimer tune nonetheless.

We used to have arguments about whether it was the Rhine or the Rocky Mountains (a different tune.) We now refer to it as "Bonaparte Crossing I95." (I95 being a major highway here.)

I've heard two completely different tunes, one sometimes called "Napoleon Crossing the Rhine", and the other sometimes called "Napoleon Crossing the Alps." (substitute Bonaparte for Napoleon in either one.) The one I've heard as "Alps" is basically the same tune used for the song "Mick Maguire" which has the chorus "Johnny get up from the fire, get up/And give the man a seat/Can't you see it's Mr. Maguire and he's courtin' your sister Kate...". I'm going to check out the tunes from JC's tunefinder and see which ones are which, if they are different.

MAybe it should be Bonaparte crosses the Adirondacks. Joseph Bonaparte finished his days in the Mountains here in Upstate New York. I haven't heard of the song but i woulod assume it would be either the Rhine or the Alps for the original title although I must say i definately like "Bonaparte crosses I-95." Neil

Is this going to turn into "Alternate Tune Names"? That could be kinda fun. Several in my bunch cannot remember names unless they made them up, so, Sandy River Belle has tranmorgified into Muddy Swamp Woman, etc.

Okay.....we don't know what this is but we'll call it "Dead Frog Crossing the Rue."

Okay, the three distinct tunes I got from the JC's tunefinder link are all variations on the Mick Maguire tune that I know as "Bonaparte Crossing the Alps" from an MP3 by a group known as Fiddling In the Parlor.

Contrast that to Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine as done by Permanent Wave.

Bottom line, is if the "Alps" tune is what you want, JC's tunefinder will get you .abc notation of it which can be turned into standard notation (dots) by a number of programs, my favorite of which is ABC2Win, which is available by following this link. For the "Rhine" tune, I haven't been able to find it in ABC or anything else but I've got banjo tablature for it and if you're interested I'll try and transcribe it to standard notation or abc or whatever. Send me a personal message.

PS Tina, you'll have to register as a Mudcat user (free) to send a personal message but it's safer than posting your e-mail address.

PPS My banjo book also calls the "Rhine" tune "Sherman's March to the Sea."

Here are a couple of MIDIs from JC's tunefinder:
Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine
This is Bonaparte Crossing the Rocky Mountains, even though in JC's Tunefinder it say's he's crossing the Rhine again. He isn't.
I couldn't find Bonaparte Crossing the Alps anywhere.

The second link Jeri gives above is the "Alps" one (or Mick Maguire). Napoleon didn't cross the Rockies, he sold 'em to Jefferson :)

Okay....We call it "Short Guy Cross Dresses."

I wouldn't say that to Bonaparte's face if I were you. He might object to being called short.

Neil - in our neck of the woods, wouldn't that be Bonaparte crosses I90?
