BS: computery help needed

I really like the idea of making a web site where we can promote the band and play or give access to MP3 files of some of our stuff. Now bearing in mind that I have the technical flair of a three toed sloth, can anyone suggest a web page builder that will allow me to do this, hold me by the hand and speak gently to me as I blunder through it and dry my tears of frustration when I screw up on a monotonously regular basis? All offers of help/links/valium greatfully accepted.

It helps to know a little HTML but Frontpage Express that you probably already have assuming you use IE will help get you started.

There's a nice freeware program called Arachnophilia (click).

Thanks Pene, just trying to download it.

Also, there are several places which allow you to put up free webpages and they have easy to use templates, guides, etc. you don't even have to know html on them to get going. The one i have my jewelery on even allows me to accept credit cards without having to have a merchant account. I'll send you links to one's I've done.

This isn't the site I was looking for, but it still looks as though it would have some good info, including a guide to some of those free sites that I mentioned above, just click here

Thanks Pene Azul and kat/katlaughing.

And, thanks Morticia, for asking the question.

Was thinking of such things this morning, and, Lo!
Mudcat answers. Kinda spooky, isn't it...

Microsoft Front Page is a great program for making web sites. I do a little of it and I dont have to know html. All I do is type and it makes the html setup.

Morticia - I am condemned to call myself a 'webmaster', not because I like to but because I must run a website. Mine is made simply with Microsoft Word (77). It works, if not just install the HTML support with SETUP.

What you can do with this is also very simple: put information on the net and (almost) nothing else. If you don't have any further needs (e.g. show the world how tricky you can set up a website) just use it. The results will load FAST (thank you in advance) with ANY browser (see above) and you won't have to cope with the whimsies of a new program.

Morticia - keep taking the tablets and leave the computer stuff to those who know that a monitor is not just a sort of lizard, that mouse balls are single and get sticky sometimes and that a key board is not where the dog lead hangs with the key to that suitcase you lost in Brittany!

Damnit Liz, you may be my closest female friend but you have no faith! It's about time I learned how to do more than just switch this on and sob when it doesn't do what I want it to do!Errrr, a monitor is a kind of lizard isn't it? I'm home with an ear infection today so plan on trying out a few of the suggestions above ( many thanks, peoples). Keep one ear open for the sound of sobbing and rescue as required please!

Morticia,

I should point out that Arachnophilia might not have the degree of hand-holding that you seek. Can't argue with the price, though :^)

Look, I've just spent 3/4 of an hour waiting with your LFU (or the LFG as we know him)with the SO's car on a double yellow line, whilst he got his machine back from the menders! Computery help for me usually means driving for miles whilst he talks loud gibberish in my ear! All I can say is thank heaven he found a service point closer......

Little tip - the thing that pops out is not a cup holder.

I've finally got round to looking at Arachnophilia. It seems a competent enough program but I would be inclined to agree with Pene's comments and I feel that something like the freely available Front Page Express is likely to be more suitable for Morticia's requirements.

You're right Jon, I couldn't make much sense of the other programme ( when I say stoopid, guys, I mean stoopid!)but I haven't had a chance to look at Front Page yet as it isn't loaded on this machine and can I find the original disc....of course I can't.....ho hum....tripod seem okay to do simple stuff with lots of hand holding but I can't figure out how to add MP3 files.......any other suggestions now you know you're dealing with one of natures truly simple souls ( and Liz,I'll thank you not to comment and make a show of me)??

A quick word of caution, however, regarding posting on "free" website providers. "American Writer," the publication of the National Writers Union, of which I am a proud member, had an article in its most recent issue regarding this very issue.

Did you know that some services state in the fine print of their agreements that the company retains "the exclusive ownership of any material put on their servers, for any purpose (including derivative works), in perpetuity." This language came from none other than Yahoo! and meant that it owned your intellectual property to anything you posted there (Geocities) and you were SOL. That particular language has now been changed, thanks to overwhelming response from the INternet community.

But there are these sorts of "rights grabs" going on all over the place and you have to make sure you aren't giving your rights to whatever company hosts your "free" website. If you see in the fine print anything that says that you grant exclusive rights to the Company in exchange for the web space, click out and keep looking.

"All rights?" that means ANYTHING -- music, sketches, photos, text, designs ... and you don't want to sign that over, do you?

And so on. So ... READ THE FINE PRINT. And make sure the Terms of Service don't rob you blind. Remember, the Robber Barons don't ride trains anymore: They own Internet companies and some of them would like to own YOU.
