03 Jul 00 - 09:24 AM (#251012) Subject: RE: Song of Saint Francis?? From: Liz the Squeak There are several; there is a hymn called the Canticle of the Sun, which is the one where he goes on about brother sun and sister moon (or burning sun and silver moon for the hymnbooks) which is 'All creatures of our God and King'. Then there is the Make me a channel of your peace, which can be found in most modern hymn books like Mission Praise, Celebration Hymnal or Songs and Hymns of Fellowship. It was paraphrased and set to music in the 70's and quite quickly gained popularity. Then there is another version of the canticle of the Sun which is partly in italian - Laudate te, o mi Signore. That is in Celebration Hymnal as well. Most of those books should be available both sides of the pond but you may have difficulty with Mission Praise, as it is getting a bit old now..... not unlike myself! If you have trouble, I can do the lyrics but not the tune. If you have a private address I can scan it and send it to you. Let me know through Personnal Messages if you want. LTS

03 Jul 00 - 07:17 PM (#251303) Subject: Lyr Add: MAKE ME A CHANNEL OF YOUR PEACE From: Joe Offer I found the lyrics above at a site called weddingguid.co.uk. The lyrics above are the way it was sung as the funeral of Princess Diana, with the "O Master grany that I may never seek..." used as a refrain after every verse. Other than at the one funeral, I've heard the "O Master" sung as a third verse, a fourth higher than the rest of the song and with the tune slightly different. -Joe Offer-
(Sebastian Temple) Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred let me bring your love; Where there is injury your pardon, Lord; And where there's doubt true faith in you. Make me a channel of your peace. Where there's despair in life let me bring hope; Where there is darkness, only light; And where there's sadness, ever joy. Oh, Master grant that I may never seekMake me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; In giving to all men that we receive; And in dying that we're born to eternal life. © Copyright 1967 OCP Publications Click here for a page with a MIDI, or here (click) for just the MIDI. |
03 Jul 00 - 07:27 PM (#251306) Subject: RE: Song of Saint Francis?? From: Liz the Squeak It is the prayer of St Francis - the canticle of the sun is different and is where he calls everything brother or sister, from which the title of the film 'Brother Sun and Sister Moon' comes. This was the film of St Francis' life and was very well done. Sebastian just paraphrased a well documented prayer. LTS |

Yours are the praises, the glory, the honor, and all blessing. To You alone, Most High, do they belong, and no man is worthy to mention Your name. Praised be You, my Lord, with all your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun, Who is the day and through whom You give us light. And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendor; and bears a likeness of You, Most high One. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in heaven You formed them clear and precious and beautiful. Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Wind, and through the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather through which You give sustenance to Your creatures. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Water, which is very useful and humble and precious and chaste. Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom You light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong. Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces varied fruits with colored flowers and herbs.
Praised be You, my Lord, through those who give pardon for
Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death,

03 Jul 00 - 07:57 PM (#251319) Subject: RE: Song of Saint Francis?? From: Callie Hi folks I used to love both of these hymns at school and haven't thought of them for many years. Canticle of the Sun - wasn't that sung by Cat Stevens in the film? (again, haven't seen it since I was a little girl). Thanks for your postings. I wanted to choose the name 'Francis' as a confirmation name but our coordinator wouldn't let me because it's a boy's name. I did get to go to the town in Italy where Francis set up his first monastery (and the name momentarily aludes me). There is, hanging on the wall, a painting of Franics which is considered to be a contemporary portrait. Peace Callie |

From: Bagpuss I see some people have already posted the words to make me a channel of your peace, but I just wanted to say it has a rather nice chord progression at the start (the way we play it anyway): D, Dmaj7, D6, Dmaj7. There is also another hymn based on these words, called Lord Make me a means of your Peace: Lord make me a means of your peace Where there is hatred sown, let me sow your love, Where theres injury lord, let forgiveness be my sword, Lord make me a means of your peace. Unfortunately I cant find my copy of it, so I cant give you the melody, or chords or the rest of the verses. And I dont have a mic on my computer, so I cant even make a file of me singing it!!! 04 Jul 00 - 03:07 PM (#251771) Subject: RE: Song of Saint Francis?? From: Peter T. The canticle is considered to be the earliest piece of Italian vernacular poetry. It has an interesting history because Francis (whose father spent a lot of time in France, hence the name) was obsessed with troubadour music, and he made up a beloved called Lady Poverty, who he sang to. He somehow hybridized the life of the wandering troubadour with the wandering monk (sort of a Woody Guthrie prototype, Woody not being a saint or anything). In the lives he and his followers are always singing and carrying on. If you get a chance to read the original lives (not the Little Flowers, which is a later bowdlerization), do. They are among the most moving documents in history: they breathe the clear air of a new thing in the early Italian sunshine. When I went to Assisi, the most extraordinary thing there was a pair of Francis' work clothes, hung up on the wall -- they looked like farmer's overalls!!! yours, Peter T. |

This is the first song I wrote so I have great affection for it, though I must admit it isn't very singable: the word/note coordination is a little forced, and the song just keeps going on and on. But I am proud of how much I was able to incorporate of the original version. Canticle of the Sun

In reading the lyrics to "Make Me a Channel of Your Peace" or The Song of St. Francis as it was noted in our mimeographed hymnal in the early 70s, I was reminded of how much children love that song when they hear it. I remember first hearing it when I was living in a cottage on the edge of some woods in a town where my father had been posted as a NYS Trooper (police to those of you in the UK). That would put me at about age 7 and the year 1971. I had my first guitar and it was a song I tried to play but didn't quite manage. By age 10 I was playing it regularly at Folk Mass in the back row of guitarists with the other learners and youngsters. By age 14, I was playing it often while leading the Music Ministry for Children's Mass at a local Catholic School. In the other thread I mentioned that I still hear this song at funerals for Policemen and Firemen. It adds something hopeful to those services and comments on their life's work. |

I found this in several old books (by using Google Books), and I inserted line breaks so that it would correspond line by line. However, this is shorter than the text Joe posted. I don't know why, but all the copies of the Italian text that I found broke off at the same point. This was really just a search and copy and paste job for me; I really don't understand Italian, although I can see the correspondence between homo and uomo, etc. Beware of typos. 20 Nov 20 - 05:07 AM (#4080308) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Canticle of St Francis/Make Me a Channel From: GUEST,Rory Prayer of Saint Francis (or Peace Prayer, or Simple Prayer for Peace, or Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace) A widely known Christian prayer for peace. Often associated with the Italian Saint Francis of Assisi (c.?1182 – 1226), but entirely absent from his writings, the prayer in its present form has not been traced back further than 1912. Its first known occurrence was in French, in a small spiritual magazine called La Clochette (The Little Bell), published in December 1912 by a Catholic Church organization in Paris named La Ligue de la Sainte-Messe (The League of the Holy Mass). The author's name was not given, although it may have been the founding editor of La Ligue, Father Esther Bouquerel (1855–1923). Christian Renoux, a history professor at the University of Orléans, published in French in 2001 a book-length study of the prayer and its origins, clearing up much of the confusion that had accumulated previously. The Franciscan journal Frate Francesco and the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano published articles in Italian summarizing the book's findings, and Renoux published an online abstract in English at The Franciscan Archive. Original title: Belle prière à faire pendant la Messe (Beautiful prayer to be made during Mass) First published in: La Clochette Country: France Language: French Publisher: La Ligue de la Sainte-Messe (ed. English translation: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring love. Where there is offence, let me bring pardon. Where there is discord, let me bring union. Where there is error, let me bring truth. Where there is doubt, let me bring faith. Where there is despair, let me bring hope. Where there is darkness, let me bring your light. Where there is sadness, let me bring joy. O Master, let me not seek as much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that one receives, it is in self-forgetting that one finds, it is in pardoning that one is pardoned, it is in dying that one is raised to eternal life. . |

The prayer was circulating in the United States by January 1927, when its first known English version (slightly abridged from the 1912 French original) appeared in the Quaker magazine Friends' Intelligencer, under the misattributed and misspelled title "A prayer of St. Francis of Assissi". The saint's namesake American archbishop and military vicar Francis Spellman distributed millions of copies of the "Prayer of St. Francis" during World War II, and the next year it was read into the Congressional Record by Senator Albert W. Hawkes. As a friar later summarized the relationship between the prayer and St. Francis: "One can safely say that although he is not the author, it resembles him and would not have displeased him. . |

Thatcher quoted the Prayer of St Francis as her programme at her inauguration in 1979. It was pretty obvious to everybody what she really meant by it, and the gesture was remembered by British connoisseurs of sick and twisted political rhetoric for long after she'd quit. tells us more about his politics than it does about Margaret Thatcher. I would assume that she meant what she said, and it was a heartfelt request for reconciliation. Unfortunately 'the left' in Britain have to have their say on any quotes by Tory ministers. |
