BS: Is everyone here from Sheffield today?

I got back from Sheffield yesterday after performing in a parade with giants. Now I've posted to several different threads today and at least 3 of them mentioned Sheffield, Morris and giants!! How synchronistic is that?

Anyone else had that happen??

LTS, who is getting paranoid that certain Sheffield people will work out which three Sheffield City Morris men I admitted to fancying........ ooer.

Morris men and fancying in the same sentance?
is it a bladder thing or a big stick thing??

Oddly enough, I was in Sheffield, too, but on Thursday evening last. I picked my daughter up from a choir performance in Bradfield Church. And what should I find as I walked to the Church after parking the car, but Handsworth Sword Dancers & a Morris side whose identity I can't remember? My French lodger who was with me was most entertained. And as they were dancing outside the pub, I was late picking my daughter up. But I had a pleasant evening.

Yes, it's a plot, but it's a secret!  Meanwhile, here are some Sheffield songs in the DT and Forum:

The Sheffield Grinder
Spence Broughton
The Sheffield Apprentice
The Dalesman's Litany
and (sort of) Sheffield Park

I'm amazed to see mention of Bradfield Church as we are now talking only a few miles from me - even nearer than Sheffield itself. Why Sheffield has suddenly become a hub - don't ask me, perhaps we should get together , perhaps we already do and just don't know it.

By the way Liz I saw photos of some if the musicians with the Giants in the local news paper so I will have to go back down and see if any match the description that you've given of yourself. I did recognise one person playing. Sorry to hear about the loss of your melodeon.

It wasn't my melodeon, but a rather nice custom Dino Baffetti three row, with a pink flamingo sticker on it - if you see it for sale locally, inform the police, they have a description of it.

Apparently we were on Channel 4 in glorious technicolour, except we were all in black..... I'm the one not wearing wraparound sun visor, or carrying the dead dear on a stick.... (a stang to everyone else), the red and white giants (the good looking ones) are War and Peace - check out the Sheffield City Giants Home page http://guest.btinternet.com/~alec.brady/Giants/index.htm and you'll see them. The black giant with the big bird on her head is the Morrigan - there are pictures of her around the 'net but I can't remember the site - try www.witchvox.com/wvoxhome.html she was there a while ago...

I will be in Sheffield on Saturday - at The Harlequin. It is the tenth anniversary of Linda being the landlady. There will be lots of singing and drinking and generally folks having a great time. Will I see any of you there?

Following on from Malcolm's Sheffield songs, there are also a couple of tunes:

The Sheffield Hornpipe, which you can find on lots of recordings and in lots of ABC collections. (I would give a link but the web is misbehaving for me this morning)

Sheffield Waltz recorded on the last Waterson:Carthy album, a great tune about which I've found no details.

Just wanted to let y'all know I've never been to Sheffield, wouldn't recognize it if it came up and bit me in the ass, have no plans to go anytime soon, and am not offended at being called a colonial..........oh.....uh, skip that last bit...wrong thread.

But if any of you are in Sheffield, passing through or staying the night, on vacation/holiday, or whatever, please give my best to anyone that I don't know who is there and also my best to those that I don't know and aren't there..........and the same to those I've never met.

Best to All!!!

The Harlequin is in the backroads just off the Wicker. If you follow a 53 bus down the Wicker ( from the market area towards Meadowhall), it will turn left and pass the Harlequin. Sorry I spend too much time on the buses - perhaps someone else can give you better directions.

By the way there are two versions of the Sheffield Hornpipe.

(thinks)....

Probably not.. my office is in Glasgow..

It has to be said that, wherever you are, a number 53 bus will get you somewhere else eventually. However, ours are red and yellow. Are the Glasgow ones still orange ?

I have one brother living in Sheffield so I suppose I could end up there at any time. I lived in Sheffield for a few months, staying with another brother who had a house in Hunters bar and I quite liked the city except for the Porter Cottage - some tales got twisted and it is the only pub I have ever been banned from. I have a life time ban in there for telling people that I was a rapist on the run and scareing the bar staff. I'm sure that if I was really doing these things, I would be banned from many more pubs...

Its all very scary!!
The world seems to be closing in
I was in the Harlequin last night talking to Linda
I mentioned Malcolm Douglas and several hours later Linda found a photo of him by the pot bellied stove
I thoroughly recommend the Harlequin (even though I still have a huge hangover)
And yes this saturday there will be song, dance, food, drink and good company I am told.
Apparently there is a Harlequin website under construction

Did someone mention War and Peace?
are they two giant figures - Woman in Wedding Dress
Man in Black with Eye Patch - both in Gerry Anderson style??
If so they send shivers down my spine!!
Last Christmas I played christmas carrols at Kelham Island Museum
Our pitch was beside these two figures
We were pretty terrible and I wanted to crawl under the hugh skirt and hide my shame
In our defense the people organising our group had decided the night before to play some irish carols that the rest of us had never heard
I wish someone had taken a picture
There was a very large steam engine, some Thunderbird Giants and some very small frightened whistle players

Yes Roger, that is they.... although I wouldn't let Sheffield City Morris or Sheffield City Gianters hear you call them Gerry Anderson - these were much more expensive!

Besides, you may just end up underneath one as a punishment....

If you want to get friendly with the band, they practice on a Sunday Morning. Look up the website to see which Sunday morning. They are always after musicians and suchlike, and experience tells me they know every good pub in Sheffield!! Who knows, one day, we might even meet!

Sorry for taking so long to reply to the question about the Glasgow buses. LOL

Well the city's municipal buses were privatized...and they were orange

Then the company was bought over - and they went red - sort of London transport-ish... makes it easier if they buy old buses from London I s'pose.

Except - some them are white pink and purple...

Glad to be of help...

Cheers

I bet the White pink and purple buses are First buses.

We have these - they tend to get called Barbie buses - great for access but when they are on busy routes with buses only every half an hour they get very full. I'ld miss Glasgow's orange buses.

I shared an office once with a guy named Sheffield....also I used to teach at a cullinary school so probably any number of my students are in the Chef Field. A horrible and totally extraneous thought: this Christmas, I forsee an advertisement featuring a number of lads on the phone to each other bawling,"WASSSSSSAIL!"Perhaps they are wearing Dickensian top hats. Backwards.

Funny you should mention that - our chef at Euston Tower does actually come from Sheffield - he was the doubting Thomas (Phil actually) who didn't believe there were giants there....

I'd just lie to add that I'm NOT in Sheffield! Not even close. Unless Essex is close by your standards, I suppose...
I did go there once, and very nice (although freezing cold) it was too. Sadly, my most abiding memory is of totally failing to find where we'd parked the bike, and traipsing around various near-identical car parks looking for it. Although faithful & well-trained (it understands "Stay" very well, and has been known to "Die for the Queen" on occasion), it's not up to bat-bike come-and-meet-you standards yet...

Tracey, you are nearer to Sheffield than you realise!! Actually you ain't but Essex isn't that far from where I am (it used to start just across the road).

I had a bike like that - parked it up one night for choir practice, went to the pub, went home, went to church twice on Sunday. Wasn't until I needed it to go shopping on Monday that I remembered where it was - I'd walked past it four times!!
