22 Nov 99 - 11:54 AM (#139537) Subject: Info Req - Bring me roses in the winter From: alice@cascoind.com I'm looking for information on a song one of my teachers used back in high school when I was learning about chord transitions. I have the lyrics and chords but don't know anything else about the song... has anyone else heard it? The first verse goes something like this Bring me roses in the wintertime When roses are hard to find Bring me roses in the wintertime I've got roses on my mind Roses are sweet almost anytime - and yet Bring me roses in the wintertime How easily we forget |
22 Nov 99 - 12:06 PM (#139546) Subject: RE: Info Req - Bring me roses in the winter From: Allan C. It was done by The Womenfolk back in the '60's on what I believe was their only album. I still have the record and will check it to find info on the author, etc.. |
22 Nov 99 - 03:57 PM (#139636) Subject: RE: Info Req - Bring me roses in the winter From: Allan C. I checked the album and was only able to discover that the name, Sheldon and the ASCAP thingie were next to the title. BTW, Sheldon is not one of the names of the women who comprised The Womenfolk. A lot more searching caused me to discover that I was in error: the group put out a total of five albums. |
22 Nov 99 - 04:23 PM (#139643) Subject: RE: Info Req - Bring me roses in the winter From: Frank Hamilton This song was written by my friend Ernie Lieberman who during the bad old days of McCarthy used the pseudonymm, Ernie Sheldon. Last time I heard, Ernie is in Northern California where his wife Ann works as a full professor of sociology at one of the schools. Ernie was a member of People's Songs and People's Artists out of New York and then he became a pro songwriter working with the likes of Elmer Bernstein, the film composer. One of his tunes in collaboration with Elmer was "Baby The Rain Must Fall" popularized by Glen Yarborough and Glen's only singles hit. Of course, Ernie knows Joyce James of the Womenfolk. We also collaborated on some pop type songs, one done by Peggy Lee and another by Patty Duke. Nothing chart busting but it was fun and did reach Billboard Charts. Ernie is a friend of Pete Seegers and the early crew from New York People's Songs singers. He plays a nice guitar and sings. He wrote a song called "Song of My Hands" that was recorded years ago. He was also in the LImelighters replacing Glen Yarborough for a while. Frank Hamilton |

This is another tune I only heard in the Wexford area, and only 2 verses. If anyone knows the correct name, or more verses I would appreciate it ever so much.
Bring me a rose in the wintertime,
The next verse began with, "Bring me your love in your later years, When love is hard to find," and the rest is forgotten. It is a lovely song. Wish I had sung it more often now. |

Bring me a rose in the wintertime,
For a rose is sweet,
Bring me a friend when I'm all alone,
For a friend is sweet, Maybe? Not quite the same, but close. Apparently it is a Sorority song, for women's groups. That is where I found it anyway. Click to play |

I cannot thank you all enough for all the words and history of the song. It seems that words and verses must have been made up and changed about to please the singer of the moment. The sheet music I have for Give Me The Roses Now shows R.H. Cornelius and James Rowe as the authors. Is one of them the "Welsh miner" you speak of? I wouldn't swear to it, but I don't think the Carters ever claimed to have written it; they just sang it. I've heard it done by Bryan Bowers, too. Lin |

The recording has: Bring me a love in the autumn years When it's hard to find Bring me a love in the autumn years Love is on my mind Well, love is sweet, most any time and yet Bring me a love in the autumn years How easy we forget The lyrics above are the ones I've always sung.
