Branwen, it would have been better to post your question on the previous thread and keep all the information about the song together, so it's easier to find. No big deal, but try to remember next time that it's better to refresh old threads and add to them if there's an existing thread on a song.

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: READY FOR THE STORM (D MacLean)
From: Mbo

This is how I play it:

.....Bm
The waves crash in and the tide tide pulls out
.........A
it's an angry sea but there is no doubt
...........G
that the lighthouse will keep shining out
....F#m
to warn the lonely sailor
..........Bm
and the lightning strikes and the wind cuts cold
...............A
through the sailor's bones, through the sailor's soul
...............G
till there's nothing left that he can hold
..F#m
except the rolling ocean

....Bm.....G.............A
but I am ready for the storm, yes sir, ready
Bm.....G..............A.........A.............Bm
I am ready for the storm, I'm ready for the storm

Etc.

Oh give me mercy for my dreams
cause every confrontation seems
to tell me what it really means
to be this lonely sailor
but when the sky begins to clear
and the sun it melts away my fear
I'll cry a silent weary tear
for those that need to love me

CHORUS

The distance it is no real friend
and time will take its time and
you will find that in the end
it brings you me, the lonely sailor
and when you take me by your side
you love me warm, you love me and
I should have realized
I had no reason to be frightened

CHORUS
CHORUS

Is this the same key as MacLean's?

I worked some chords out by ear, and they sound okay to me:

Verse:

Em - C - Am - B7 - (do progression twice)

Chorus:

Em Am B7 -
Em Am B7 - Em

I like to capo up two frets. The timing is 4/4. Great song, isn't it? While we're on Dougie Maclean, does anyone have chords to his "Solid Ground"? I'll start another thread asking this too.

Thanks for the chords, Marion... I'll try both versions... I don't think I'll be able to convince my guitar player to use a capo, though... He's classically trained, has a music degree, and is super snobby about it, absolutely REFUSES to use a capo, says it's beneath him. He'll just have to transpose it by ear...

Thanks again.

My, this thread has been moving quickly. Two possible arrangements within ten minutes of asking the question.

Mbo, slight lyric correction: I believe Dougie actually sings "...I had no reasons to be frightened." It's funny English to my ear (maybe it's a Scottish thing?) but I like it.

And I love the expression "those who need to love me."

I play it in Em too - pretty similar, in the verses either Em D C, or Em C Am (depends on which I feel like doing)

And wherever there is a B7 in the version above, I do D followed by Bm.

I like playing it in B minor. I'm not sure it's the same key Dougie does it (don't hit me) I don't have Dougie's version, but his songs "She Will Find Me" and "The Nhairi Bhan" he does is B minor, and I sing 'em that way. There's just something about Dougie & B minor. As for the lyrics, I just quickly cut & pasted them off the Dougie lyrics site. Oh, you're welcome, BTW.

Hmm . . .

I'm definitely gonna try the progressions above. What I'm posting below is progression I use and I'm 99% sure I originally copied it from a Dougie MacLean songbook.

READY FOR THE STORM
Dougie MacLean
(Dougie tunes his guitar C G C G C D#, capo at 5th fret)

(Em)O the waves crash in and the tide pulls out
(Em7)It's an angry sea but there is no doubt
(Em6)That the lighthouse will keep shining out
(Em7)To warn the lonely sailor

And the lightning strikes and the wind cuts cold
Through the sailor's bones to the sailor's soul
Till there's nothing left that he can hold
Except the rolling ocean

chorus:
(Em)But I am ready for the (B7)storm, yes sir ready
(Em)I am (C)ready for the (B7)storm, ready for the (Em)storm

Give me mercy for my dreams for every confrontation seems
To tell me what it means to be this lonely sailor
But when the sky begins to clear and the sun it melts away my fear
I'll cry a silent weary tear for those that need to love me

But distance it no is no real friend and time it takes its time
But you will find that in the end it brings you me, the lonely sailor
But when you take me by your side you love me warm, you love me
And I should have realized I had no reasons to be frightened

Em)O the waves crash in and the tide pulls out
It's an (D9)angry sea but there is no doubt
That the (C)lighthouse will keep shining out
To warn (D)the lonely sailor

And the (Em)lightning strikes and the wind cuts cold
Through the (D9)sailor's bones to the sailor's soul
Till there's (C)nothing left that he can hold
Except (D)the rolling ocean

chorus:
But (Em)I am ready for the (B7)storm, (Bm) yes sir ready
Em)I am (C)ready for the storm,(Bm) I'm ready for the storm(Em)

Just watched Kathy Mattea sing this on You Tube. Clearly she is in some alternate tuning. I suspect Jeremiah Mc Caw above is about on the right track. My problem is I am lazy, I don't read music. I need to know the chord shapes she is using and the chord they represent. I suspect alinact above has the right idea chord-wise. I have tried googling for chords for Ready for the Storm, but no one seems to be addressing the obvious open tuning. Can anyone out there help me?

You can find TAB for this and many other songs through Dougie's own website. You need to register for the forum at www.weeguitar.com to get the TAB. It's shown as in CGCGCD# (which I guess is really CGCGCEb ie Cminor tuning).

Cheers,
Mark

FWIW, in both the Dougie MacLean solo version that Mr Happy just gave the link for and the Kathy Mattea recording with Dougie joining her on the chorus the 2nd halves of the 2nd and 3rd verses are juxtaposed (as in the "Kathy Mattea version" that alinact posted).

The lyrics work just as well either way.    I'm just wondering if either one is considered the "preferred" version.

Aren't some people strange? Segovia used a capo when he felt like it, but this bloke "says it's beneath him".

Segovia wasn't/isn't the only such top-notch musician to 'stoop' to using a capo PRN either.

Hi. I listened to Dougie's recording on YouTube, and I heard a different order to the lyrics there. Also, the video starts on F#m, vs Bm, so I did up an F#m chart with the lyrics in that video, as well as a Bm version. This is not the open tuning others have mentioned.

One of my favorite songs of all time.

Best, Finn.
