Lyr Req: Roseville Fair (Bill Staines)

Heard a song; I know its well known but the bits of lyrics I think I remember don't work in the search. The song is about two lovers who meet at a fair; it mentions the band, corn fields, her looking lovely and (I think) being dressed in blue - jog anyone's memory?

Sure sounds like Bill Staines' "Roseville Fair" to me. It's on his Whistle of the Jay CD on Folk-Legacy. CLICK HERE

That was his first recording of the song.

Does anyone know of words to "The Rosedale Fair," a tune I learned on the mountain dulcimer from an old gentleman now deceased.

Is it possibly the Roseville Fair? We sing it at our song circle, and I could eventually find you the words....

Sorry about the spacing; it's a cut and paste. I couldn't pull it out of DigiTrad, and I'm not even sure if this is what you're looking for....

ROSEVILLE FAIR
Bill Staines

Oh, the night was clear and the stars were shinin'
And the moon came up, so quiet in the sky
And all the people gathered round while the band was a-tunin'
I can hear them now ... playin' 'Comin' Through the Rye'

She was dressed in blue and she looked so lovely
Just a gentle flower of a small town girl
Then he took her hand and they danced to the music
With a single smile, she became his world

(Chorus)
And they danced all night ... to the fiddle and the banjo
Their driftin' tunes, seemed to fill the air
So long ago, but they still remember...
When they fell in love, at the Roseville Fair

Now, they courted well, and they courted dearly
They'd rock for hours in the front porch chair
Then a year went by ... from the time that he met her
And he made her his, at the Roseville Fair

(Repeat chorus)

So here's a song for all of the lovers
And here's a tune ... that you can share
May you dance all night ... to the fiddle and the banjo
Oh, the way they did at the Roseville Fair
Oh, the way they did ... at the Roseville Fair

I believe that is the record, although I think there's a chance that Jeri also did it - a reply with a useful link posted in two minutes. My best is three minutes, and I think I did that only once.
Anybody want to try for one minute?

Skarpi -

I'm unable to reach you through the personal messages. I have a question about a friend I'm trying to look up in Iceland. Is there another way to contact you? Thanks.

Oh, the mud was deep, and the midway noisy
And the smell of fried dough filled the air
The very first time I came up from Joisey
to have some fun, at the Tunbridge Fair.

You were dressed in....well, that was the attraction
And you got goose bumps in the cold night air.
And the people gathered round, just to catch the action,
At the girly show, at the Tunbridge Fair.

(Cho.)

And you danced all night, and the moon shone brightly
On your rosy cheeks, and your curly hair.
And I fell in love, so I came back nightly
To the girly show, at the Tunbridge Fair.

That's as far as I've gotten. Collaborators are invited to add on....

Peter.

(from dick greenhaus)

"Give me your A," said the fiddle to the banjo,
"Or your G or D. I don't much care..."
And we sat around, while the band was tuning
All night long, at the Roseville Fair.
