At this year's Douarnenez (Brittany) traditional boat festival 17th-21st July, (their web-site is here http://www.douarnenez2000.com/index_gb.htm (click))they organised a chantey competition for the Stan Hugil Trophy. I'm sure many of the Mudcat sea-song singers will be interested. Today I've e-mailed them asking for details of who won and with what. I'll keep you posted.

Well, as you can see from the above date this has been a long time coming but it's a long and convoluted story including e-mails to Brittany, e-mails to the editor of the magazine mentioned above, holidays of the organiser of the festival Michel Colleu and the involvement of my local French Consul whose assistance has been greatly appreciated. So here is the information gathered in French and translated. It came to me today!

It was at the initiative of Le Chasse-Maree and Maritime Life and Traditions that the first competition for the Stan Hugill Trophy took place during the Douarnanez 2000 festival. The competition took place on Wednesday 19th July on the subject of the 'Bateau-Scene' (general activities on boats); and on Thursday 20th July on the subject of tacking manoeuvres on board ship 'virer au cabestan' (heaving at the capstan), 'au guindeau' (a smaller capstan with a horizontal axle)(I suspect that's a pump shanty -bigJ) and ' a hisser' (heaving up the anchor).

There were thirteen groups or individuals taking part:-

Callenig ...................................Wales (GB)
Daniel Roy...............................Quebec
Delai l'Aiga.............................France (Occitany)
Frederique Forgeard................France (Brittany)
Gromor at les Gueules a Fioul-France (Normandy)
Jenkins' Ear.............................Jersey (Channel Islands)
Johnny Hanging (sic)..............British Isles (I would think that's 'Hanging Johnny -bigJ)
Lierelet....................................Holland
Mollyhawks.............................British Isles
Mueiz Port-Rhu.......................France (Brittany)
Percy I Lotry Shangaiu............Poland
Rum and Shrub Shantymen.....British Isles
Tom Lewis...............................Canada

Now for the results:

Working Songs on the Boat
1st.........Group Lierelet from Holland with a ballast song in their local patois Frison.
2nd........Group Percy I Lotry Shangaiu from Poland with Randy Dandy O and Blood Red Roses.

Capstan Shanties.
1st........Not Awarded
2nd ......Tom Lewis of Canada.
3rd........Johnny Hanging of British Isles.

Songs for Heaving at the 'Guindeau'
1st........Moueiz Port Rhu singing 'Jean Matilot' with a special mention from the jury for the interpretation of an hitherto unpublished work song.
2nd.......Percy I Lotry Shangaiu singing 'Ja, Ja, Skipper Jan Maloy'.
3rd.......JOINT WINNERS .Gromor Et Les Gueukes a Fioul singing 'A Dunkerque Vient d'Arriver'
AND:
Johnny Hanging singing 'Sally' (This could be any of a variety of songs mentioning the ubiquitous Sally - bigJ)

Songs for Heaving Up the Anchor:
1st.......Tom Lewis of Canada (No note made of his song I'm afraid - bigJ)
2nd...... Percy I Lotry Shangaiu singing 'Cheerly Man'
3rd........ Johnny Hanging singing 'Hang, Boys, Hang' (Hanging Johnnie)

The Stan Hugill Trophy was not awarded to a group but WAS awarded to Tom Lewis of Canada as a Chanteyman.

The judges for the competition were:
Ben Gontran from Rodrigues Island, singer and collector of sailor's songs.
Robert Bouthillier from Quebec, collector and singer.
Inge Wijk from Sweden.
John Wright from England.
Michel Colleu from Brittany, organiser of the festival
and
Martin Hugill one of Stan's sons.

Bon voyage!

Were the songs performed static, i.e., at the microphone, or were they performed as working songs with actual work being done? How was the judging settled? Close haromnies? Presentation? Volume?

Interesting thread. I agree with Ickle Dorritt. I'm really interested in this one.

Yes, dear. It doesn't. How come you didn't ask your husband?

I took my old tub down to Brest and Douarnenez in '92 and '96. I think there was a Dz in '98 on a smaller scale, but the big bashes are every four years.

It was in Douarnenez in '92 that I saw Stormalong John performing on the lightship helipad, and I was captivated.

Big J mentioned Maritime Life and Traditions. I get that publication (it's quarterly) and a couple of issues ago they had a wonderful article on Stan Hugill. Stan had been interviewed previously, and that was included. He told of the time he was shipwrecked off Portugal. That, and there were a number of photos. I suppose a person could get a back issue if they wanted... Margo

Thanks for your interest. According to the information passed to me (trouble is that it doesn't say which year although I would guess at 2001) and I quote - "The second edition of the Stan Hugill's Trophy will take place during one of the bigger chantey festivals which will be either in Great Britain, Holland, Poland or the United States" - Watch this apace.

HUGILL TROPHY 2000

The Group Jenkins Ear are from Guernsey not Jersey.

The lads were joined by myself and Pat Sheridan from the Irish group Warp Four.

I have a certificate on my wall to commemorate the event.

While I would have loved to have been there, the idea of a a "chantey competition" seems odd to me. What sort of criteria were used? Was this a one-shot deal, or are there a number of these competitions? And were the "Capstan shanties" really so bad that a first-place could not be awarded?

Oh - I just looked back at the original post and saw that it was made in the year 2000 ... however, my questions demand to be answered!
