My husband says that he remembers a song by the Dubliners that goes in this vein......... They say that drinking's a sin But a drink doesn't hurt now and then For drinking has been in this world For ever and ever Amen

Does anybody know the rest of the lyrics/tune please?

Adeane

The song is the Seven Deadly Sins. I can't find it in the dataase but this thread http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=1506#15272 does have some of the lyrics. It appears the the Dubliners stopped at 5 sins as they did with the 7 Drunken Nights.

Some say that smoking's a sin
But a pipe now and then is enough
Smoking has been in this world
Since Adam taught Eve how to puff

Refrain:
And if it wasn't legal then the lawyers they would sue
And the prisons would be full of folks who had a smoke or two
And if they didn't like it then away the girls would run
And if there wasn't plenty then the poor folks would get none.

Some say tht kissin's a sin
But tell me how can that be true
For kissin' has been in this world
Since the very first day there were two..

And if it wasn't legal then the lawyers they would sue
And the prisons would be full of folks who had a kiss or two
And if they didn't like it then away the girls would run
And if there wasn't plenty then the poor folks would get none.

Some say that gambling's a sin
But I'll bet you 50 to 1
That gambling has been in this world
Since horses and greyhounds could run.

And if it wasn't legal then the lawyers they would sue
The prisons would be full of folks who made a bet or two
And if they did'nt like it then away the girls would run etc...

Some say that drinking's a sin
But a gaggle is fine now and then........(CRS)

Sorry but after all these years I can't recall all the lyrics. >

That's an obvious immitation or "Some say that kissing a sin" to the tune of "Old Simon the king". That and a mid-17th century version preceeding it are the Scarce Songs 1 file on my website, where you can also find an ABC of the tune. www.erols.com/olsonw ('Kissing' was a subtile old euphemism for sexual intercourse.)

There's a different tune for a short traditional version called "Kissin's No Sin" in MacColl and Seeger's 'The Singing Island', #11, 1960.
