Hi, folks,

Duane D. & I are just back from a wonderful 8-day vacation in the state of Maine, USA. We visited my sister, went to the annual Yarmouth Clam Festival, visited seacoast towns (including Camden, where Gordon Bok lives), drove north & saw moose. A highlight of our trip was participating in the monthly coffeehouse, Mocha Cafe, at the Chocolate Church in Bath, Maine, run by relatively new Mudcatter, Naemanson. I had just started playing autoharp a week before (my 1st instrument since piano lessons as a child) & Duane convinced me to sign up w/ him for open mic. We were 11th on the list & played just after Naamanson's friend, JP. Wouldn't you know she played one of the songs we had prepared?! I assumed we'd just blow it off, but Duane said to go ahead, anyway. The song was "Early" by Greg Brown. JP had done it w/ guitar. Our version had slightly different words & we accompanied it w/ autoharp & bowed psaltery. The audience, already primed, sang along & seemed to have a good time. Then, Duane sang "San Francisco Bay Blues" which some of you may have heard him do at the DC Get-Away last October in Max' blues session. I joined him for a kazoo duet & the audience really cracked up! Naemanson is a really lovely man & seems to do a great job w/ the coffeehouse. A light dinner is served before the music. Then, there is open mic, followed by a performer set of about 45 minutes. That night, Kat Logan was on. She was amazing! She has the most lovely voice & a kind, expressive face to match. It was a great pleasure to hear & see her. Naemanson was running sound, but we could hear him singing along & wished we'd had a chance to get together w/ him later in the week. kendall attended the coffeehouse & I got to pass on all the greetings, good wishes, & hugs that various Mudcatters had sent w/ me. Poor kendall seemed a little overwhelmed by receiving so many hugs from a strange woman (and Big Mick knows the strange part is true!), but he handled it well. Doug R, I tried to break it gently that I'm a Republican, too! After the singing, I told kendall I'd never performed publically before & had just been playing the autoharp for a week & asked how he thought it had gone. He replied, "Never ask a Mainer's opinion unless you want to hear it." Being a relatively wise woman, I went on to other topics. :) kendall expressed his gratitude for everyone's support through his recent medical adventures. He looked good. He wasn't supposed to be talking for another week when we saw him, but I could tell that was tough for him! During Kat's set, kendall sat w/ us at a front table & just beamed. It was really fun to watch him watching her. Kat is a friend & protege of his. When she went up for an encore at the end, kendall whispered something to her & she sang "Early" for the 3rd time in the evening. The audience loved it! JP & I felt a little as if we'd been part of the main act. And kendall leaned over to me, grinning, & said, "I put her up to that!" Mudcatters sure are fun to meet in person! Duane took a few photos which we will try to send in to Pene Azul soon.

best,

bbc

That's great, Barbara. It's always good to hear about Mudcatters meeting in real life and making music. Any photos of you and Duane with the autoharp and psaltery?

I'm glad you are home and safe. Thanks for the nice report on the Mocha Cafe.

I'm glad you had a good time both at the coffeehouse and here in my home state. I'm especially glad you got to see a moose. I know that was to be a highlight of the trip.

Oh, and for the rest of the 'catters out there, she did a very nice job with the autoharp. The psaltery and autoharp was a good combination too. As far as the choice of Early goes, you know what they say about great minds.

No, Alice, as far as I know, no photos of us w/ the instruments. We'll work on our publicity photos when we quite the day jobs (no time soon!). Thanks for the kind words, Naemanson. One correction, folks--I am very sorry that I mis-stated Naemanson's friend's name. It is "JB"! Chalk it up to aging mind & ears.

bbc,
One week with the autoharp and you performed in public! Wow. I am still hiding in my bedroom plunking away after two months. I'm impressed.
Glad you all had so much fun. Thanks for sharing it.

Mary, no need to be impressed; I could just be foolhardy. I've sung a little bit in song circles w/ Duane, but never tried to sing & play at the same time. I was mostly just concentrating & trying to get through the song. It was a neat feeling, though, to have the audience sing along & clap.

bbc: what a wonderful report. I truly enjoyed reading it. Kendall must have taken your news about being a Republican in good spirits because you got back to NY safely and lived to recite the tale! DougR

Great story bbc - thanks for passing on such detail! I wish I was there, and could almost imagine it from your description. I would love to have heard a conversation between you and kendall re: politics. Maybe when he's all healed up you and he can get together again and discuss the mertits of your favorite political parties!

Thanks for the feedback, kendall! I'm sending in a few photos to Pene Azul to do an events page, if he wants to, but I'll send the "unpublishable" ones to you after I get home from church. Hope to see you again before long. Take care of that voice! Oh, FYI, Naemanson is singing his heart out today (as he was yesterday) w/ his chanty group at Portland, Maine's big Tall Ship event, OpSail. Wishing him well!

love to both,

I'm really sorry I missed it. I was seriously thinking about making the 3 hour trip to go to the Mocha Cafe, but was tired and had a headache, and just couldn't deal with driving that far. (Yeah, I know - I'm a wimp!) I can't wait to see the pictures of what I missed.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but The Chocolate Church website.
Here's info on the Open Mic and the Schedule.

OK - if we start planning now, maybe we get all the Mudcatters up to Bath Maine for next year's anniversary of this grand event! ;-)

Better than that, Jed, any of you who can might consider being there on Friday, Oct. 6th. Bok, Muir, Trickett will be doing a concert in what is said to be (unfortunately) their last concert tour. I wish we could go, but a Friday, during the school year, is rather unlikely.

Wow! A big buncha 'catters in Bath, Maine? Bring 'em on! We're ready for it. How many of you need real beds and how many can sleep on the floor? I'll gladly volunteer Kendall's house for the party! Don't tell him. He loves surprises! LOL

Oh hell, I can volunteer my own if pressed! Come one, come all. Just give me plenty of advance notice so I can leave town! *BG*

What a great time you had! I was in Maine last month and was just floored by it's beauty. The view of Camden from atop a hill in the nearby state park was breathtaking. the bright green of Maine's trees and foliage in June was like nothing I've seen at home in Northern California. Thanks for posting your report. It was a pleasure reading it. I'll have to meet the Maine Mudcatters and check out the Church next trip.
